Just in one year, just the clean air act, prevented hundreds of thousands of early deaths. The lowest possible estimate of the benefits found that benefits outweigh the costs by 3 to 1. The most likely estimate is 30 to 1. The high estimate is 90 to 1. Ninety. Nine Zero. www.epa.gov/clean-air-ac...

We're living in the era dominated by dudes who wrote bad PHP in the nineties and it shows.

There is a type of like pop science journalism geared toward educated liberals (your Kara swishers, your freakonomics, etc) that I think has the potential to rot your brain nearly as much as Joe Rogan type stuff

On a day when the chief executive compared himself to a king, it’s worth reading the conservative Heritage Foundation on why “Washington and Washington alone … is the father of this country.” www.heritage.org/commentary/t...

There are two wolves inside of you. If the first acquires lock A and the second acquires lock B, and then the first attempts to acquire lock B while the first attempts to acquire lock A, they will deadlock. Teach your wolves concurrency.

My plan: (1) Canada joins US, with its 10 provinces becoming the 51st-60th states (2) Influx of new House members and 20 new Senators give Democrats necessary votes to impeach and convict Trump (3) Canada secedes from US

so much of this is because the elite abuser class has decided that MeToo and BLM must never happen again

all these boys want a goth girlfriend but don’t study the moves of one gomez addams.

ah trump’s merit in action. only certain people can be meritorious

It’s been a thin but real silver lining to watch @wired.com *show up.* I really think this is some courageous journalism.

I think there's a general understanding that Trump's bluster works well to project strength to stupid and incurious people, and then confusion about why the media so often seems to fall for it, and I have to say, there's an Occam's Razor solution to this conundrum.

Lotta people engaging with this post like there's a moment in the future where we hold all the power and get to stand in judgment of those who weren't with us. That is not currently the trajectory we're on. If you've got a plan to make it happen, LMK! Otherwise gonna stick with "build the coalition"

Stealing a line from John McPhee: "The top of Mount Everest is made of marine limestone"

Colombia: We're not taking shackled detainees returned on military flights. Transport them with dignity Trump: Trade war! Colombia: OK Trump: Fine, no more shackled detainees returned on military flights Colombia: Good. Was that so hard? Trump: They gave in!

Hey ADL - still think we ought to give him “a little grace”? Still old enough to remember when the ADL spoke out against Nazis. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/e...

Does everyone on the autism spectrum inadvertently appear at a rally for German neo-Nazis and tell them they shouldn’t feel guilty about their far-right extremist views because their ancient genes make them good fighters? Is that a common symptom? Or can we draw conclusions about Musk from this?

Me, in class: In valen's name, why? Student: Was that a B5 reference? I think the kids will be alright.

i’m glad google plus failed.

I know this sounds weak, I know it. But kindness is one of the few things we carry that can make a difference for each other. We can’t undo all this hate, but we can still make life a little easier for others.

If you actually opposed Nazism and accidentally did the salute, you’d say “of course I oppose Nazism in all its forms.” Musk will not do this for obvious reasons.

It's true. We don't need to invent outrage. My outrage at both him and you, as an American, a Jew, a parent of a child with autism, & (far more importantly) simply as a human being, is already incandescent. It doesn't need to be invented. Go pound sand.

Our rhetorical use of “inclusion” rather than “truth and righteousness” to advance equality for marginalized people within the church was moral and theological cowardice then, and the consequences of our proud and practiced lukewarmness will be paid now, by those same groups of marginalized people

one reason i am adamant that we should not treat the constitution as purely or exclusively a form of law is that it cedes the field to clever lawyers. “oh, well if some chuds in trump’s white house says birthright citizenship doesn’t exist then i guess it doesn’t exist.” but

I tend to agree with the guy that weird stuff happens but the problem with turning your massive website into a Nazi organizing engine is that you lose the benefit of the doubt when you do something like this. Also, plenty of people are defending it as "So what?" and not "Misinterpretation"

as I've said, sometimes you need a deranged but attractive sociopath

I’ve been thinking about how monumentally stupid the Elon video game cheating thing is and I think it comes back to this post there aren’t a ton of people who work in cars, or rockets, or even software but everyone - everyone! - understands cheating at video games totally unnecessary self-own

New: Updated U.S. Government Emissions Projections Emissions are expected to decline 29-46% by 2030, 36-57% by 2035, and 34-64% by 2040, compared with 2005 levels. This represents about double the 2030 emissions reductions projected before the passage the IRA & BIL 🔌💡 www.energy.gov/policy/artic...

Uecker is dead. No tribute can do him justice. He lived a long life, and was himself to the end. He went like I think he wished to go; quietly, without distraction to the team. But I want to offer some thoughts in what is a very upsetting time for many people.
