Colombia: We're not taking shackled detainees returned on military flights. Transport them with dignity
Trump: Trade war!
Colombia: OK
Trump: Fine, no more shackled detainees returned on military flights
Colombia: Good. Was that so hard?
Trump: They gave in!

I shared your post with WaPo's Philip Bump about five minutes ago.
Here's what happens when someone asks @pbump.bsky.social to please ask his bosses not to print Trump lies as facts:
I think trade wars and financial badgering are the next incoming alternative to soft power
That just needs to be the game plan for every country Trump threatens. Tariffs on Canadian lumber?
Canada: Hey china, u up?
We need to encourage working together with those of the same democratic values, not encourage ego posturing lands who are OK with returning to colonialism
Some appointed commissioners might be surprised by that. Especially given their reaction to peaceful protest
Whereas China, Russia, and now the US are interested in expanding via invasion.
Both sides are not the same.
Also remember when trump and his Republican thugs wanted to be praised for saving TikTok after they were the ones trying to shut it down... And his base believed him?
Anyone else feel like we need to double the education budget?
It is hard to think how the American media will somehow present this a huge Trump wins somehow... Just like the ceasefire on Gaza that may not even happen after all!
It appears Biden sent 140+ plane loads back to Colombia so they obviously accept then back. It's the treatment of their people that mattered.
Rendering their garments and crying while their parents and grandparents get deported. No sympathy for those that voted against themselves. Not a bit. Don't at me.

US Media: Trump wins
@wbbmnewsradio.bsky.social
What Columbia was 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 protesting was the slave ship atmosphere of shackled deportees crammed into a cargo plane.
Only military 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 planes are allowed from now on.
So more a win for decency for Columbia.
https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2025/1/27/how-trump-coerced-colombia-to-accept-deportees-by-threatening-us-tariff-war
As a sampling of things to come.
Trump: "100% tariffs, travel ban, visas cancelled and econ sanctions."
Juan Valdez: "Wait, wait...I didn't really didn't mean it. I'm sending my personal jet, let's be amigos, K?
Trump: "Say it."
JV "I'm sorry."
The Times fails us again. And I am learning to be skeptical of every headline from MSM.
And whilst more expensive coffee is a price you're prepared to pay unfortunately there's an asymmetric cost for Colombia

Unfortunately, the AP dropped the ball here too.
Colombia has always accepted immigrants on ICE flights. They objected to military flights w/immigrants shackled. Trump agreed to go back to ICE flights.
Civilization takes another dying gasp.
Seek alternative news sources folks
For smaller stories or perspective, The Conversation is good. I already liked their science stuff, but have been impressed with political info too. I get a weekly email of top stories.
What a sad state we live in when even ‘the news’ is more about getting clicks and likes and less about the truth

Watch what the other hand is doing.
"The Colombian Foreign Ministry said that it would guarantee the dignified treatment of deported Colombians". However this is being followed up on with diplomatic talks, so nothing certain yet.

I think that’s exactly what happened, but Tinyhands is pretending he is some great negotiator
THE LAST
PRESIDENT
OF THE UNITED STATES.
47 AND NO MORE.
ONE OFFICE CAN NOT HOLD THIS MUCH POWER. HE IS PROOF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE U.S. MUST BE CANCELLED.
REPOST, PHRASE IT BETTER - BUT SPREAD THE WORD #EndPresidency #LastPresident
Diplomacy is difficult but a lesson from finance may eventually come to play here, diversify your portfolio.
So Trump is paying more for a less effective result, just to be cruel.
The Guardian https://search.app/L8Css2JGqsiVAgTb7
“'That is why I ordered the return of US military planes carrying Colombian migrants,' Petro wrote, sharing a video of Brazilian deportees with shackled wrists& ankles.
And all these ppl talk about him like he’s a brilliant negotiator. And the tariffs are some prelude to his real cunning strategy as though he’s playing 3 dimensional chess 🙄
It drives me crazy He’s just a loud mouthed blow hard
You can find one in any bar in North America ffs
It’s like a timeline from point 1 to point 10 but they only put in parts 5-7
Though to defend the reporters it’s the editors like Kahn and Healy who constantly frame things in the most positive light for Rs and the opposite for Ds. Krugman confirmed this.
Reporters, if your bosses take your work and write lies about it, you are as guilty as they are. You keep supplying them things to lie about.
We are truly in an Orwellian world.

1) Create a problem
2) Make threats
3) Stop making the problem
4) Claim that your threats made the other side back down
2)???
3) Profit
Media: Trump won!
Good.
All of them, Bbc as well. Like they're scared of upsetting the orange rapey tosser
