Sauron knows how horrible he is, and how horrible Morgoth was, and he cant want that for himself.
comment in response to post
Maybe Sauron doesnt even want the ring. We know the ring is evil and dominating of its own accord. If, once upon a time, Sauron put, say 1/3rd of his spirit into the ring, is that more or less than he has at the end of the third age? He's one rounding error away from being enslaved by it too.

Like, OK, there's not a ton of time to make plans, but there's a few months to at least think of something, even if you can't set up to execute.
comment in response to post
It seems like any sensible person would say, go west, get to the gray havens, and send that fucker seaworthy. Gandalf is a maniac who knows, as sauron does, that getting rid of the ring is not enough - sauron wins when it's out of play - but it's weird that he doesn't have much of a plan.

Another thing I am wondering: When gandalf and frodo are discussing his flight from the Shire, Gandalf doesn't immediately recommend Rivendell. He says, go north, south, east, west, it doesn't matter. Why doesn't it matter? He only suggests rivendell when Frodo asks again.

but probably some sort of pregnancy/fertility metaphor. Tolkien ofc knows all that backward and forward. The book draws no attention to it, but its a cool portent that the four hobbits are bound together like that right from the get go.
comment in response to post
other cool shit: I liked when the hobbits set off from crickhollow into the old forest: the Hedge at the end of buckland has an earthen tunnel they pass under to reach the other side. In icelandic sagas they swear oaths of brotherhood by passing under earth arches. I don't know a ton of details

anyway, conclusion: Sauron is more annoyed by the ring's re-appearance than anything and he was happier when he thought the elves broke it and he survived its destruction.
