The steel wool is (I think) the only thing they can't chew through. I also found out the little bastards leave a scent trail to tell others where the entry points are. Have a look around water pipes too that's how they got in mine. The hole was minuscule.

Hate to tell you but they adapt to peppermint oil. The only solution is find the holes, stuff them with wire wool and traps with peanut butter. The little fuckers get in the tiniest of spaces.
