I mean, we have musicals based on movies, like "Anastasia" and they changed it. Changed the villain and his song, added new music, changed the love story (a bit)...
But still it is such a good musical.
Like, Gleb is fantastic, "Still/The Neva Flows" and "In a Crowd of Thousands* are wonderful...

Yes, it is done to "modernize it", but it wasn't necessary. You have a super iconic piece of media and just threw away every song (except "Roxanne" maybe, and that was done badly) to change it for a modern song because whatever.
