However, I’ve also been interested in superionic conductors (potential battery materials). Here you could perhaps track the linewidth of relevant optical phonon modes for optimization. There you could aim for the widest linewidth. In short: yes, but you need to know a lot of basic input already.

But that doesn’t tell you about what happens at low temperatures . For example, in high Tc cuprate superconductors critical temperature goes through a maximum, but carrier density (and thus plasma frequency) in the normal state increases monotonously.

Yes, this all based around a Bruker FTIR. Automated optimization is something I’ve been thinking about, but it is not exactly trivial. For most metallic samples you could track shifts of the plasma frequency by looking at the reflectivity (remember the Drude model).

This would require 700-800 K and a partial oxygen atmosphere (or argon to achieve reduction).

We do use a resistive heater that could in principle push to 1000 K. I’m studying single crystals featuring interesting quantum phenomena. Most of these have melting points well below 1000 K. One experiment I hope to realize is in situ optimization of high Tc superconductors through oxygen annealing

It is the inside (sample holder) of a home built optical furnace. Indeed, I was aligning it to the spectrometer before assembling the outside housing. We should be able to do FTIR up to 850 K with this. Completed product below.

Still not. If I would have the capability, I would copy that entire part of the site and host it on my personal (foreign) service to keep the information alive. Someone should revive crucial information (about HIV for example) from all the sites they dismantle. It should not be hard…

I do not think that occasionally eating vegetarian is going to make that much difference…(although I became a vegetarian for the same reason). Since BTU probably doesn’t mean much: with the total energy produced per year, you can raise the temperature of Lake Superior by 18 degrees.

And even though they are cute as hell, please don’t keep them at home. This girl will be released into the wild after winter and at a sanctuary they know how to do that. Their numbers are dwindling (in the Netherlands) and this one will hopefully produce a nice litter come summertime.

Define ‘did not read’. I have about 5-6000 files in my library. I’ve read all abstracts (that is the criterion for adding them to the library), diagonally read about 20%, looked at figures of another 20% and really thoroughly read maybe 10-20%. I do have a folder labeled ‘to read’ with 60 papers.

Had to think of our time living in Geneva. When the wind blows in, spray from the lake covers the fences, benches and everything around. The wind in the picture (jan. 2005) was coming from the left. Around the lake wind facing sides were covered.

There is no distinction between hard/soft science. One uses the scientific method or not.
