Grew up in beautiful Altadena; now aging in place in the great damp PNW.

coffee is for closers and marshmallows are for team players

Toad sat and did nothing. Frog sat with him.

I guess I never realized that you still have to do chores during a coup. BigBalls has my social security number and I’m folding the laundry

Also, hell no.

Woody Guthrie songs all day, every day. "Deportee" tells the story of the plane crash of Jan 28, 1948, when 28 migrant farm workers died, as they were being deported from California back to Mexico. Their names were not reported in the news.

Frog and Toad went for a walk. Toad tripped over a rock. He bumped into a tree. He fell in a hole.

We are about to enter an era of extreme and dangerous culture war in the United States. How do we protect our communities and work toward a cultural ceasefire? In this piece I wrote a couple months ago, I offer one possible path. wapo.st/40q1BDn

I Must Become a Menace to My Enemies by June Jordan www.divasofverse.com/2016/08/i-mu...

Time to re-read Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler. Climate change chaos, apocalyptic fires, the year 2025... Octavia Butler lived in Pasadena and Altadena for many years, and is buried there. (She went to John Muir High School and Pasadena City College -- me too!)

Altadena... "The Eaton fire in Los Angeles swept through Altadena, a historic Black neighborhood. It was among the few neighborhoods not subject to redlining. Residents have included Jackie Robinson, Octavia Butler, and Eldridge Cleaver." wordinblack.com/2025/01/dest...

Besides reading Octavia Butler: can we rally and support Octavia's Bookshelf--an independent, Black woman owned bookstore in Pasadena: www.octaviasbookshelf.com

Not lost on me that it's nonprofit tech, app.watchduty.org, showing up & actually working in the midst of the LA fires (donate to them!) Meanwhile platforms fail to surface key news, vital info is paywalled... As I've been saying, we need a new tech paradigm, yesterday!

Meanwhile, in Greenland

In addition to pricey mansions, the homes of working-class people were also lost in the Palisades fire, including a mobile home park on Pacific Coast Highway. “It was rent controlled,” one resident said. “I had been there for 10 years in this trailer with an ocean view. I was so lucky.”

Altadena, our old hometown. ♥️ Eliot Jr High, NY Drive, palm trees and mountains, El Molino Ave ♥️

🌹Wishing you all love, solidarity, and liberation in 2025🌹 (Send cats)

Altadena is an old, important Black (and multi-ethnic), middle-class neighbourhood that has been flattened by the fires but people are busy complaining about rich celebrities complaining they have lost their homes.

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again." She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.

My letter in today's Guardian. Just asking, like. But I think we know the answer.

we had a great 8 years of it being acceptable to be publicly queer but the right tapped into their hysteria and are trying to push us back decades. this is why the left warned of relying on rainbow capitalism because their support was about profit above all else. the solution is for us to not hide

That time has come again. bsky.app/profile/mani...

"Are we going to do anything about it? ...if we thought there was a 50 percent chance of an asteroid crashing into North America a year from now, would we be content to hope that it wouldn’t?" www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

“Once you’ve been to Cambodia, you’ll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands,” Bourdain wrote in “A Cook’s Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisines,” his 2001 memoir.
