The lesson of history is that when you give in to fascist bullies, they ask for more.

Don't you think it's time to drop the title "Leader of the Free World" ?

"Prospect" did as much and more than most to push Labour to the right.

There are signs that their arrogance has taken them too far. They haven't got the popular mandate they assumed they had.

Trump just sees the world as real estate, which is not the best training for politics. It could be worse, he could have done PPE at Oxford.

Perhaps Trump would have made a deal with Japan after Pearl Harbour ? "OK, you can have Hawaii"

Special Relationship ended at Suez after which it became a one-way-street in the direction of Washington.

Even the arch warmonger Churchill came to the correct conclusion.

US Democrats, UK Labour & German SPD all share the same problem. They've become increasingly dominated by the liberal middle classes & careerists. The leadership moves to the right to accommodate the populists. Less and less traditional basic conviction. And so the downward spiral continues.

But the USA has a written constitution & a balance of powers but that hasn't stopped the arch populist Trump

Hypothetical history. If Americans knew they'd end up a Putin's vassals, would they have fought the War of Independence ?

I use it all the time to go to Brussels & Paris. Much quicker, better service, more relaxed than flying.

Both Hamas & Netanyahu have a vested interest in keeping some armed conflict going

All British governments have vetoed the idea of a joint force based on the EU and for numerous reasons, Starmer will do the same - not least to avoid upsetting Trump & giving him an excuse for more anti-EU & UK retaliation. Starmer is running out of options for his deluded UK exceptionism.

It took several decades from Nuremberg to get to the special prosecutions of Milosevic & then the ICC, which now has been proven toothless.

Richard, the left has been discussing replacing neoliberalism for decades. Labour has demonstrably failed to be the vehicle. What happened to the new alliance for the New Year ?

Canada isn't in Europe and already has a functioning agreement with EU. Perhaps we Brits should just concentrate on getting UK back in EU.

Keep your minerals but get no meeting with Vance - must be the ultimate no-brainer

This smug complacency won't meet the challenges faces the country. Starmer is continuing Tory austerity & deluded in thinking he can steer a middle course between Trump & Brussels. See today's Grauniad on copying Farage. Try my "Washington, Brussels & British Exceptionism" on substack @mhindley

Deluded Starmer thinks UK has the power to do so ? At Yalta even Churchill acknowledged it was just Roosevelt & Stalin with the cards

That's why he was appointed, to play mad very hard cop to Trump's hard cop

US made the European borders after WWI & WW2, now Trump with Putin wants to make European borders again. The least we can do is help Canada & Greenland keep theirs.

It's what I observed over decades in Palestine, for all it's good will & aid, the EU has had no influence.
comment in response to post
So the plan is the USA & Russia will make the peace & Europe will pick up the tab.

It's time to disestablish the CoE. To have the Head of State doubling as the head of one brach of religion is positively primitive.

It's a trap for Starmer, too. He hasn't the courage, skill to negotiate his way through this.

As someone who likes many aspects of US life, culture I can assure you that you are not as reliable as you seem to think you are. That said,Trump has reached a whole new level.

Whenever I see Lammy fawning to Trump & his clique, I recall W C Field's maxim which perfectly sums up Trump's attitude to UK "never give a sucker an even break"

You must have enough cash by now, so why not take the lead and withdraw your dealings & investment in USA ?

Intelligent Labour votes Green & xenophobes vote Reform Co.

We can't fight Russia off without USA as Zelenski acknowledges. Trump will make peace with Putin over head of Ukraine with territorial concessions by Ukraine. Big Question for Starmer is, who's side is he on ?
comment in response to post
Not only a joke but an example of corporate greed. Problem is, the failure of collective memory the like of which you rightfully expose.

Trump is just the unhinged loony, the worry is the predators behind him seeking to profit from the chaos he's creating.
comment in response to post
Federalism was never on, the Gaullistes, led ironically by Thatcher, took over after Delors' high point. Trump hates Europe & like Putin wants to destroy it. Starmer hasn't the intellectual or political skills to deal with this new situation.
comment in response to post
How long can Starmer cling onto "neither Washington nor Brussels, but British Exceptionism" ? See my substack @mhindley
comment in response to post
Do you think Putin & Trump will take any notice? Like 1918 & 1945 a US president is going to redraw the map of Europe. So whose side is Starmer on ?
