I used to think the same about movies. How can I have opinions about them if I've never made one. So I went to film school. Now when I watch movies I think "damn, all that hard work and money down the drain and this movie still sucks." There's a lesson in there I'm sure.

also, I don't wanna advertise it too much to folks who aren't already in the discord, but word on the street is games are played on wednesdays at 8pm EST. Some very cool and innovative ones. Ran by the best people in the scene. 👀

ohhh you'd be a big hit! Wednesdays at noon! (12pm EST) People check in, sometimes folks give little presentations, sometimes folks are open to little Q&As. some beautiful games coming up! Cool to hear and learn about all the systems out there and some of the process folks are going through.

shout out to @gauntletrpg.bsky.social Brindlewood Bay was brought up a few times and we all learned a bit about it and what kind of stories it's trying to tell. Lots of cool stuff coming up for that system.

My copies of wingspan came with these "eco-friendly" (I don't remember the material. Will need to watch one of Jamey's live casts again) bags. Only issue with them is they rip pretty easy if you clamp em tight. 😭 But if I'm just using them for transportation.... Maybe that's ok!

Annnnndddd just got the tracking for them to come in. Aim is to put this together with as little to no plastic as possible. So hopefully the boxes arrive fine. I think ultimately we'll have to bag the coins and wood bits so nothing gets out of place during shipping. maybe they have those eco ones.

Just started a publication over on Substack a bit ago to try my hand at solo reviews as well!
Highly recommend the Analog Adventure game “MIRU” by @hinokodo.com.
You can check my write up here if you like:

Congrats! Excited for ours to arrive. Been hyped to play for some time now!

I hope so! It is a lot of tokens to manage. So there's some trade offs from just penciling an item down. But hoping the flow and tactile nature of it all makes MIRU extra approachable. A turn is just draw a hex. The direction you're moving determines weather. Tile is the terrain and event. Simpleee

Yeah so I think Keymaster Game's Fuego is a great example of a well done drawer box. (There's texture on the "strike" side of the box!!) But that push hole is genius. Keeps everything in the tray, but also very functional! (The box is nice and thick too) Stuff you don't think about.

pic from the factory. It is incredibly tricky to consider the space you need for unpunched boards AND how everything fits after it's all punched out. (and make sure there's not a ton of air in the box for things to shake around after) think we're going to be ok. i'll find out soon. full hex kit!

if folks need a small plastic bag for the 20 wood pieces, that's not bad considering the rest of the game has no plastic. not sure how to handle those.

they'll hold a variety of components at various sizes (without plastic bags) is the idea. So small wood meeples, small wood discs, cardboard tokens of various sizes (around 20mm-30mm) and some metal coins (in that 20-30mm range)
So yeah besides the wood pieces, holes are some trouble. but idk!

@lonearchivist.bsky.social 👀 has brought this up before. The cassette cards things. Very cool! A transparent desk box is very cool. My one complaint is the plastic. But it is a cool format. Especially if you were to make a game about music or mixtapes or something. So on theme!

It really is. It's fast. Very engaging. Very approachable. But also extremely replayable and physically fun. All those people tokens are fun to place around. Plays solo! I mean idk what's not to like! Game design goals for sure.

it's probably chaotic to anyone watching, I can imagine the whiplash someone would have watching a screen capture of my computer at anytime of the day haha!
I'll often let layout limitations change the story and gameplay. I will carve away words and the design until it fits the page just right.

i don't really have a linear workflow. But I write/design in layout so I bounce around with everything the entire time I'm making something. When I have a game idea, often the first thing I do is mock it up in affinity design. I think about the look/feel on day one!

I'm actually not sure what you mean by 'mailing lists'. but I was able to import my 600+ subscribers from substack no problem. idk if wordpress separates these services, but if you go through the newsletter stuff, it's all pretty seamless, no plugins needed.

I thought this too! (All my sites are WordPress) But apparently they have their own solution, and it's not obvious coming from the "host your own site" angle.

I'm going through these same pains. I've landed on WordPress. I believe Jamey uses it for Stonemaier games. He might can tell you the pros and cons. But so far it seems free at any amount of subscribers. I think I pay $4 a month for my custom domain.

I'm under the impression that D&D makes up like 80%+ of the hobby. I would hardly call that a small slice. But I understand your sentiment that there's other options out there.

& if it's about that creative excercise, I find it interesting that the default seems, to me, to let dice determine a lot of the story points. The ups and downs, and players are mostly passive viewers of an experience. Sure they get to roll dice, but there's no agency there. It's a rollercoaster.
