The loss of two beautiful trees near my house got me thinking about how to persevere in trying times. blog.hirokoyoda.com/p/flying-plu...

A show I was on last year has been translated into English, and will be airing on NHK World! "Fringe Histories: Japonism," traces the global rise of Japan's pop culture. For US folks, 11:10pm tonite PST, or 11:10am Sat PST. Live feed here: www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/...

Super excited to announce that the German editions of Yokai Attack and Yurei Attack are out! Japanischen monsters und geisters! 👺👻 🧵

Loving the covers of the German editions of @hirokoyoda.bsky.social's and my "Yokai Attack!" and "Yurei Attack!" They're also available on Amazon US for those who want to practice their German.

I was interviewed by BBC about Izumo Grand Shrine as a spot for matchmaking. You might believe, or might not. But as I say, belief isn’t core to Japanese spirituality. It’s about respect and gratitude. Read it here, and Happy Valentines Day! www.bbc.com/travel/artic...

What a fun and timely column by @yutranslates.bsky.social. Thank you for mentioning my newsletter!

I've been studying traditional sewing. Today my classmates and I participated in a ritual to thank our sewing needles. It's called hari-kuyo, and we stick our broken or bent needles in tofu to give them a soft send off. It's a way of thanking tools that make our lives easier.

I wrote about the Japanese tradition of Setsubun on my newsletter this week. But here's a pretty unique way of celebrating it -- with a pet lizard! This playfulness is one of the things I love best about our spiritual culture. It's open to everyone... even a bearded dragon! The links are in the 🧵

The arrival of a game-changing Chinese AI model last week got me thinking: why didn't Japan get there first? It turns out the answer is a lot more interesting than I thought. blog.pureinventionbook.com/p/why-didnt-...

Today is Setsubun! It’s a special day in Japan to drive negativity out of your life. This is how it works! blog.hirokoyoda.com/p/setsubun-t...

Japanese breakfast, the sequel (also not the pop band)

I agree 😆!

Japanese breakfast! (not the pop band.)

At right, the photo from my ryokan window; at left, the photo @mattalt.bsky.social took of me getting the shot! 🤣

Today’s lunch is ekiben, a bento from a train station. It has a nice slab of grilled salmon on a bed of Ikura😋

Just wrapped up a livestream on this week in Japan's pop culture! Check it out here: www.youtube.com/live/d0PKXBn...

It's pancake Sunday! Have a nice day!

I was happy to see Shogun win at the Golden Globes because it really represents an ideal cross-cultural collaboration. In fact, I think it is a roadmap for all sorts of collaborations even beyond entertainment. I wrote about why I think the series works: blog.hirokoyoda.com/p/jidaigeki-...

This is what I saw in the kitchen first thing this morning. My mother in law really stocked up… I think we have enough bread?! 🤣

I built my first ever Lego set! It’s a Japanese kingfisher catching a fish. It wasn’t easy because the pieces were tiny, but I managed to finish it. I’m so proud!😆

It’s our family tradition to make crazy Christmas cookies, but I think we outdid ourselves this time 😆

America has “Last Christmas,” but Japan has a Christmas J-pop song that’s even bigger — so big, it transformed the way we celebrate the whole season. Read about it in my newsletter: blog.hirokoyoda.com/p/endless-ch...

Recently, @hirokoyoda.bsky.social booked us a room at a charming ryokan in Izumo. I didn’t realize until we checked in that it was run by City Pop diva Mariya Takeuchi, whose family has run it for generations! youtube.com/shorts/6Cb47...

Noon business meeting in Jimbocho. Got out hungry for adventure (and lunch). @hirokoyoda.bsky.social reminded me that Jimbocho is known for curry cafes. Like this one: 1982 Gavial. Vegetable and asari clam curry combo, butter/cheese rice, and… a mystery potato!?

One of the very first games @hirokoyoda.bsky.social and I worked on, under team leader @jblaustein.bsky.social (now of @dragonbaby.bsky.social). I recall all of us getting so little dev support that Hiroko and I had to enlist a local Chinese restaurant to help us decipher some in-game terms.

How Marie Kondo got her mojo?!

This goofy tourist robot popped up in the bowels of Shimbashi Station. youtube.com/shorts/UAMPk...

Deep thoughts on deep cleaning the Japanese way. That's my latest newsletter! blog.hirokoyoda.com/p/dust-bunni...

As a folklorist, visiting shrines and temples is fieldwork as well as hobby. So even though I've been strictly selective, my collection of shuin (朱印 ), calligraphy with seal stamp provided by shrines and temples, really grew!

What’s wrong? You haven’t even touched your “Baby Star” ramen wine pairing.
