That's interesting. In Japan, many temples let us offer candles to whatever or whoever we want to offer, but they always let them burn all the to the end. So I can imagine how you feel.

What happens to the candle stubs? In Japan, shrines and temples hold special rituals for those "retired" items afterwards. In our secular life, we can throw anything away, but it feels wrong to put things like this in the garbage. And thanks for reading!

Yes, memorials exist for all sorts of tools, and things that support our lives like foods. I've seen memorials to blades and eyeglasses, and fish and eggs! There are so many kinds of ways to show gratitude to the things that sustain us. It's one of the things I love most about Japanese spirituality.

No, isn’t about protecting ourselves. It’s about thanking something that helped us. Yokai don’t figure into this tradition.

Traditionally we stick needles into a piece of tofu because it is very soft. Those needles worked hard to sew many things, and we thank them by giving them a very soft place for them to rest.

I’m sorry to hear that a total stranger stole your image and blocked you. But also good to hear you have friends in Bluesky to help solve the problem🩵 My husband and I blocked that account too.
