"One of my teachers at Columbia was Joseph Brodsky...and he said 'look,' he said, 'you Americans, you are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.'"

NB Also an issue at TNA: 'the AHA issued a statement urging reconsideration of a policy change by the Secrétariat général de la défense et de la sécurité nationale that renders “some well-known sources, and many others yet to be analyzed, practically inaccessible, even to professional researchers.”

Back to the Middle Ages. Blood libel conspiracies are vogue again apparently.

This is such a good piece by Alvin Tillery, especially in putting Gay's academic record in context. Two points. Black students at Harvard, including Gay, were told that hate speech was protected. No problem with white students flying confederate flags on campus. medium.com/@atillery2/p...

To commemorate the 120th anniversary of her death, a statue of Louise Michel will be erected facing Sacré-Coeur, “monument any-communard qu’elle pourra défir du regard.” A lovely act of justice. 🗃️

We filed our appeal in Hachette v. Internet Archive yesterday. If we are unsuccessful in our fight, libraries won’t be allowed to own and lend digital books, only license them from big media corporations. Why is that bad for YOU? 🧵in comments blog.archive.org/2023/12/15/i...

Especially after this past week or so, people should be ready to fight.

Fascinating that there is so much data about these remains - since so often collections of human remains focused on typology of skulls, etc rather than the individuals from whom they came. This will be an important research tool- thank you for your work on this inventory.

Not clear why we are not hearing more about this cyberattack that continues to make much of the British Library unusable…and this also affects interlibrary loans across the UK…are they going to rejig REF requirements as a consequence? Read More: www.publicbooks.org/how-to-lose-...

These stories never tell you what is actually happening, which is emphatically NOT that humanities are disappearing from higher ed, but rather that public ed is being converted into vocational training for a working class while elite private universities for the rich will remain universities.

“When I see people watching the horrible tragedy that is happening here as if it were a Super Bowl of victimhood, in which you support one team and really don’t care about the other, empathy becomes very, very selective. You see only some pain. You don’t want to see other pain.”

Alert - motion to eliminate funding for the NEH. US folks please contact your rep right away this will be voted tonight. 😳⬇️🗃️

Half a million people in London right now. Jewish activists in New York last night. Polls in both countries overwhelmingly support a ceasefire in Gaza. Cannot imagine this level of support even five years ago. Whatever happens, the Palestinians are no longer alone.
