Clearly, women don’t do diplomacy.

We are increasingly concerned about the crisis in UK Higher Education. Read our joint statement with @royalhistsoc.bsky.social , History UK and the @histassoc.bsky.social https://buff.ly/4hSg16N #history #skystorians

Today's appeal from the History learned societies over the existential university crisis will of course get filed in the bin by Ministers and civil servants. But it got me thinking about where we are now with all this. (1/4) www.history.ac.uk/news/more-ev...

There's a reasonable case for the UK to increase defence spending, but not to pay for it by cutting public services. Keir Starmer promised an end to austerity. Today's announcement implies significant further cuts to departmental budgets, unless he raises taxes, or increases borrowing

This is so sad. I loved doing joint honours (History & Archaeology), it enormously broadened my knowledge, skills, and adaptability. Our university system is so precious, and this slow motion car crash is devastating

US, Russia, Israel, Sudan, North Korea, Belarus, Hungary. Axis of.. No, wait. Axis will do.

when did they stop calling the AFD “far right”?

I know we all love a dose of hopium, especially now. But the take, which I see all across here, that the far right was defeated in Germany tonight because 80% of Germans voted for other parties is very misleading and unhelpful. Understanding this really matters. 🧵

I wonder if we'll hear more about young female voters or young male voters.

I love this 2019 photo of Zelensky’s first meeting with Trump. This was after Trump had offered a $400 mill US military aid package in a way that seemed to suggest it might depend on Zelensky getting his legal officers to provide “dirt” on Joe Biden’s son’s business activities in Ukraine.

This man is an exceptionally good politician…

Let's be clear: the idea that breakfast clubs would adequately mitigate the impact of the two-child limit is absolute bollocks. The average household hit by the two-child limit loses out on roughly £3,800 a year. They're not currently spending that on coco pops.

Went for an evening walk along the seafront. A lovely crisp, clear night.

Any Democratic administration that follows should Immediately forego this act of disgusting theft, and if it hems and haws in the slightest about doing so it has signaled that it is fundamentally no better than Trump’s mob.

BBC News on hour reporting straight that Trump has got rid of military chiefs because ‘they’re too mired in woke culture’ 🤯🤯🤯 Traditional liberal democratic media still hasn’t learned how to report on authoritarians, even now when it’s almost too late

The language that mainstream media use to refer to anti-democratic and imperialist behavior and policies of Trump 2.0 shows most clearly that they are mainly an instrument of power rather than a check on it.

No one serious should even use the term "woke culture". You're just repeating after them, and you're ceding ground.

I'm not having Fraser Nelson playing dumb on the rise of racism on the right after years spent printing Murray, Liddle, Taki and Shriver. I literally had a DM row with him years ago where I said this would happen.

21st Century version of gunboat diplomacy: ‘Give in to our demands or else.’ US foreign policy towards Ukraine is openly imperialist and strategically aligns with an other imperialist great power, Russia. Liberal internationalism has been replaced with realpolitik nationalism.

The last few weeks have been quite useful. People have revealed their colours. Very interesting that we clearly see where they now stand. Makes it easier to see what’s important.

Media shying away from calling things what they are will be our downfall if this continues. What this should say is: Bannon whipped up CPAC crowd by talking about possibility of Trump unconstitutionally staying in office for third term—and concluded his speech with a Nazi salute like Musk did.

This is what I mean by news outlets willingly letting themselves get language-policed by the far right. You used to be able to just call this a "Nazi salute." Now it's "a provocative gesture that resembled the controversial salute Elon Musk gave at a post-inauguration rally last month."

Absolute boom times for cowardice in journalism right now.

I’m increasingly of the view that whether media outlets call this a Nazi salute tells you everything you need to know about them. If they don’t have the courage to say things which can be proven simply by looking at them, how can they be trusted to hold the Trump admin to account on anything else?

" a provocative gesture that resembled the controversial salute Elon Musk gave" - you know who else did the same "controversial salute" as Elon Musk? The Nazis. Call it what it is, a Nazi salute, rather than making out somehow Musk is the only person to have made it? Stop dancing around it.

Amanda Zurawski has been named one of TIME magazine’s Women of the Year. Amanda’s Story: Citing the state’s abortion laws, Texas doctors denied Amanda Zurawski emergency medical care when her water broke at only 18 weeks of pregnancy. It was September of 2021, and Amanda was miscarrying. Her…

Trump is on the brink of betraying Ukraine and the UK. Britain must lead in Europe by increasing defence spending immediately and all political parties should get round the table to make that happen. I fear what happens if we don't take this step.

What the hell's going on? Our attempt to give some historical perspective at an @ukandeu.bsky.social online lunch with @anandmenon.bsky.social , Margaret MacMillan and Rana Mitter.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY8V...

The names of those giving these orders will eventually be revealed. Some will be arrogant enough to think we will forget - that they can holiday in the Adriatic or shop in Paris. We should make sure that arrogance is misplaced.

So much of this that made me nod furiously that I just recommend reading all of it

*extremely ‘I write editorial comment for the FT’ voice*. Completely agree with this and also feel like it’s in part a manifestation of how UK has turned inwards. Even much of the political class seems unaware of how important and significant all this is for UK prosperity and security.

I think I'm going mad here, the dangers to the UK are intensifying almost every day and everyone's like 'la la la Half Term when is bins'. Maybe we talk about 'crisis' and 'fight' too much, so we can't realise when the boy isn't crying wolf - the wolf is at the door.

In other words, a group of law-abiding citizens had their doors smashed in by the Border Force at night, because the Prime Minister wanted some "man of action" pictures for the telly. And this is regarded as a political "F-up", not an abuse of state power. It's like we learned nothing from Windrush

Today was a very big day in our house, especially for my daughter. It was the start of her new volunteering job - once a week, for just under an hour, to build up her confidence. She really enjoyed it and it has been a huge boost to her self esteem!😊

It hasn’t even been a month yet.
