Your moment of calm today, here in Portland...

The Palestinians and their supporters didn't create our current predicament. It's a convenient, counterproductive deflection to lay the blame at their feet, and given the degree of destruction and suffering they've endured, it's also sadistic.

WRITING TIP: if you get stuck, try making the font really really big. This will remind you of being a baby, when you only knew twelve words and didn't know about death

Got a new poem up with @ogre.red today!

1. Here are some of my thoughts on the news by Erin Reed that some hospitals are denying new minor patients for gender affirming care: Hospitals that obey in advance to illegal executive orders can and should be targeted for protest actions by trans activists groups. bsky.app/profile/erin...

Don't call it a "detention camp" at Guantanamo. It's a CONCENTRATION CAMP.

as the poet said: I don't want to work, I just want to bang* on the drum† all day * play † video game console

the beauty of finally finishing a story under 5,000 words (just in time for workshop submission tomorrow 🫣)

W.B. Yeats who died on this day 1939 “I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

Donald Trump has just released a national under 18 trans care ban executive order. I am working through specifically how it tries to do this, and will live tweet here section by section as I read through it. It is not yet on the website, but has been released via press release.

Sitting down & doing it is the answer to be able to do a lot of things & it’s the same with writer’s block. Writer’s block is just writers romanticizing not sitting down & doing it. If you sit down & do it, it will happen. My mentor taught me writer’s block does not exist & we make ourselves write.

taking care of it 🔨 (2023)

I went to the library yesterday. Libraries are centers of revolution. Visit and support yours.

Friday Writer Thoughts: Don't let others dictate what you should, or should not, be writing about. Don't chase trends. Write what inspires you. Remember that comparison is the thief of joy. Remember that your journey is yours alone and no one else's.

Oh hey, if you need some beautifully haunting illustrations this year, my schedule's (mostly) free starting February! Portfolio: janaheidersdorf.com Contact: [email protected]

today we have a micro by M.A. Boswell !! in roughly 100 words, Boswell describes a recently broken up couple that consoles themselves with Taylor Swift songs & angry pancake making read it ! xraylitmag.com/not-handled-...

Lauren Carroll Harris dives deep into the lie of the tradwife influencer.

NEW STORY⚡️🐸 “Sissy” by Annie Johnson is now up! Art by @ejbraithwaite.bsky.social flash-frog.com/2025/01/06/s...

"The road to the Super Bowl comes through Detroit for the first time"

I used to think the hardest part of being a writer was figuring out the first draft. Turns out it's actually explaining to your family members why they can't read your book.

ridiculous paywalls are truly the bane of writing research because tell me why i have to become a subscriber to access a webpage on fire engineering safety from APRIL 1990. LET ME IN.

... and those are the good days

So, uh… I wrote about Taash being non-binary and how I feel we need to start establishing a difference between “harmful” and “not how I’d have done it”. This was a hard story to write, tbh, and I remain anxious about how it’s gonna play. www.polygon.com/opinion/4931...

“i’m learning blender” that’s great! i’ve been practicing microwave for a while and i think i’ve gotten pretty good at it. might tackle toaster next

it’s another christmas eve which means it’s time for my family’s yearly rewatch of die hard. some of the lines age in such a funny direction it’s a new comedy every time

Oh the weather outside is frightful And the news is oh so frightful And the people online are frightful Frightful frightful frightful frightful frightful frightful

Sire! The people, sire! They're saying you're washed! They tell tale that you're busted, your works cringe!

They should make a writing process that doesn't feel like sticking razor blades in your eyes

Aiming to get properly started on a novel draft while I start submitting some short stories I wrote in the fall ✔️

love to write a simile so bad it would turn my old workshops into a flock of starlings bursting into flight

the rush i get after reading (most of) a book in one sitting is like nothing else.

have scientists made a hair dye that doesn’t fade so fast when you take hot showers yet

Jason Shinder ♥️

I have "Fozzymandias" stuck in my head and have absolutely no idea whatsoever to do with it. "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and wokka wokka"? That's nothing. Infuriating.

"Isn’t it wonderful the way the world holds both the deeply serious, and the unexpectedly mirthful?" ~ Mary Oliver

PICK-UP LINE: Boston: “I went to school just outside Boston. No, not Tufts.” Chicago: “Call me Tom Skilling, because I’m forecasting some action later.” New York: “I have an in-unit washer-dryer.”

A lot of things suck in this lifetime, but I remember when the thought of this was incomprehensible. This is beautiful.

Me: I will just relax for a few minutes by playing a mindless game on my phone Phone: Cool, every 90 seconds you will just need to watch a little animated snuff film featuring a mother and child freezing to death, or a king slowly being crushed against a spiky wall by piles of falling rubble

It just occurred to me that one of the reasons I will never reach the bottom of my TBR pile is that every book worth reading leads to other books. Another is that so many friends are writers. I'm willing to live with both of those realities

*gripping the edge of the bathroom sink staring with dead eyes into the mirror* i need to write weirder
