A pair of backlit Common Mergansers (Mergus merganser) in flight over a frozen lake, Rocky Mountain front range, CO #birds #birdsoftheworld #merganser #coloradobirds www.felzfotoz.com

I had to stretch the frame for this one - a pair of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) overlooking a modest meadow at Chatfield State Park, CO. The background is not the sky, but the distant lightly snow-covered front range after last night's snow. #birds #coloradobirds #kestrel www.felzfotoz.com

Now that Trump's got his tariff plan in place, all he needs to become Herbert Hoover is to change his hair and enlarge his hands. The Colorado state house can save some money and put this Hoover portrait up in Trump's spot.

(1/2) I've photographed the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) so many times I committed myself to "no more". But when you see one you can't help but photograph it, so I made myself experiment with camera settings. I changed the white balance from Natural Light Auto to Kelvin 5000. #birds

One more Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) from my hike in Evergreen, CO, this one landing in last year's dead grass only to emerge with some sort of invertebrate. #birds #coloradobirds #evergreen #bluebirds www.felzfotoz.com

Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides), female, at Elk Meadow Open Space, Evergreen, CO #birds #bluebird #evergreen #coloradobirds www.felzfotoz.com

Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) at Evergreen Lake, CO #birds #bird #evergreen #coloradobirds www.felzfotoz.com

Possible confusion here, because of the total lack of red, but I think this is a juvenile female Red-shafted Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus - "gold chiseler") based on its location in Evergreen, CO. #birds #bird #northerflicker #evergreen www.felzfotoz.com

An early-returning species to northern Colorado, the Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) is remarkably hardy while being distinctive and beautiful. This male was at 7,200 ft but they are also known to breed in areas above treeline, about 12,000 ft. #birds #birdsoftheworld #evergreen #bluebird

Hundreds of Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus - "gregarious crimson") flocked ahead of me as I was walking along at Barr Lake (Colorado). I startled them en masse, unintentionally, but with a 600mm lens this was one of the few groupings I could get. #birds #birdsoftheworld #barrlake

A beautiful Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta - "overlooked little starling") showed itself today, on Rabbit Mountain near Lyons, CO #birds #bird #birdsoftheworld www.felzfotoz.com

Here's a Double-crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum - "flightless, long-eared" - not sure either apply!) taking flight at Barr Lake State Park, Brighton, CO #birds #bird #cormorant #barrlake www.felzfotoz.com

Here's a male American Wigeon (Mareca americana), a cute perky little duck that has been featured on the U.S. federal duck stamp for three separate years, at Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat, Boulder, CO. #birds #bird #wigeon

Here's a Killdeer in flight (Charadrius vociferus - they are vociferous!) above Barr Lake in Brighton, CO. #birds #barrlake #bird #coloradobirds

Ah, spring! The Great-tailed Grackles are back! Here's a female in Longmont, CO #birds #birdsofworld #bird #coloradobirds #grackle

Northern Harrier, early morning east of Boulder, CO #birds #northernharrier #boulder #colorado

A pair of Northern Flickers (Colaptes auratus cafer) perched near the front range in Littleton, CO this morning. I caught the male in flight, though mid-blink with a busy background, but it's heading towards the sun illuminating its colors. #birds #colorado #northernflicker #coloradobirds

There's a NYT review today of a coming album by Allison Krauss and Union Station. It references a 1951 poem turned into a song, The Hangman by Maurice Ogden, that's eerily appropriate for today - www.facinghistory.org/sites/defaul.... (www.nytimes.com/2025/03/19/a...)

@tracilaw.bsky.social (Your friend, @kjphotoartist.bsky.social suggest I send this to you).

I'm at 6000 ft elevation, so I don't know if the American Robins (Turdus migratorius) are returning from more southern climates or lower elevations, but they are back! Yesterday in Boulder, CO they were competing with the Red-winged Blackbird for the largest numbers. #birds #birdsoftheworld #robin

I'm just an old, retired CPA, passionate about photographing birds. I remember some parts of history, some I don't want to relive, some of which would be appropriate. Might I suggest someone maintain a new Nuremberg list of those Trump/Doge dicks so that, someday, they will be held accountable.

A very contorted Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) eating juniper berries at Walden Ponds, Boulder, CO. The bright yellow, where its right wing appears to be, is actually the tip of its tail feathers. It's called a waxwing because of the bright red wax-like tips of its secondary feathers. #birds

A Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) scurrying to rejoin the flock, Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat, Boulder, CO #birds #hooded #merganser #waldenponds #boulder

A Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) female, at rest, Rocky Mountain National Park #birds #birdsoftheworld #mallard #rmnp

A Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis - because it was "discovered" on the Delaware River near Philadelphia), this one with a morning catch before the haze burnt off near Longmont, CO #birds #birdsoftheworld #ringbilledgull #longmont

On 12/24/24, Sec. 306 was added to Ch 3, Title 36, of the U.S. Code, stating "The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is the national bird." The enacting statute, signed by Biden, provides "bald eagles are a historical symbol of the United States representing independence, strength, and freedom."

Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis) and a White Ibis (Eudocimus albus)pair, Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica #birds #birdsoftheworld #canonegro #costarica

Little Blue Heron, wading near Calle Ensenada, Costa Rica #birds #littleblueheron #costarica

Here's an Anhinga, nicknamed "snake bird" because it is often submerged with only its long neck and head above water, and whose name derives from an indigenous name meaning "devil bird", along the Rio Abangares, Costa Rica. The brownish neck indicates a female. #birds #anhinga #costarica

Here's a Bare-throated Tiger-Heron perched near the Golfo de Nicoya, along the Pacific Coast, in Costa Rica #birds #tigerheron #ensenada #costarica

A ground-foraging woodpecker, this female Red-shafted Northern Flicker was along Deer Creek as it flows into the Chatfield Reservoir, CO. #birds #northernflicker

Red-tailed Hawk along the South Platte River, south of Denver, this morning. #birds #redtailedhawk
