Oh hey… I wrote about that. www.usni.org/magazines/pr...

Current mood as we choose to rip up the boring technical and social infrastructure that lets a modern society function as smoothly, safely, and steadily as ours.

I love Baltimore

I would explore the “Tarkin Doctrine” and the struggles of the Empire to implement it. The basic concept would be how alignment to a theory anchors an institution to a course of action and filters signals to decision makers so that they only learn the flaws when it is too late to adjust.

Essentially ALL TB programs funded by the U.S. Government were officially terminated last night. Horrifyingly, that includes the Global Drug Facility that coordinates the vast majority of TB treatment and tests purchased globally. Shuttering the GDF will stop TB treatment for the entire planet....

This is false. The US actuvely supported the creation of every stage of what is now the EU, bc we believed it was better for us to have a united Europe with us against the Soviets than to have a fragmented Europe obsessed w its own problems and vulnerable to the USSR

Never felt this meme was more suitable.

Apropos of nothing—almost 10 years ago I wrote this piece for the Marine Corps Gazette, arguing that seen through the framework of John Boyd’s theories on competition and survival, American foreign policy and associated military operations were more successful when leaders

The upshot of this seems to be that the administration plans to lie about who is really acting as the Administrator of DOGE to the public (and possibly to judges?) in order to shield themselves from accountability and continue to break the law.

This is the issue with DOGE that should alarm everyone. They are unaccountable. Regardless of your view of specific policies, government works because lines of authority can be traced to the people’s representatives and decision makers can be held accountable. DOGE breaks that.

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

Great summary by @bretdevereaux.bsky.social

Last time I woke up to this many overnight messages from around the world, Kabul had just fallen.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Better advertising to come, but I’m excited to announce that registration is now live for our very heavily subsidised Teaching Indigenous Histories & Perspectives Conference on 28 June! Bursaries for travel are available plus free follow-up support. Please do share with all your teacher networks!

Re-upping this push by @tyrellmayfield.bsky.social.

Fairwell and following seas, Admiral Franchetti - thank you for 40 years of dedicated service to the nation and the Navy. Your leadership and dedication to the Navy and its Sailors was an inspiration.

You know who else thought his way of handling the world would lead to the best possible outcome for everyone?

If only there was some authority they could use…

Picard management tip: Take vacations.

This is insane. I am literally required to use my travel card for all expenses involved in any travel that is part of my job. I am literally forbidden from using my private funds except via extremely stringent exceptions. This will literally cripple all routine government travel- and for nothing.

I was just an Education Department guy under Reagan and the most junior WH senior staffer under G.H.W. Bush, so what do I know? But if I were an ex-president, and the current president were executing the most disastrous turn in American foreign policy in 80 years, I think I might say something?

Very worrying noises coming out of American military education. If they have any sense, allied militaries should reach out to anyone who gets DOGEd and offer them a role. These are smart and dedicated people who make the US military more lethal and even if the US doesn't value them, we all should.

A fantastic book. Can’t recommend it enough, @milhistlee.bsky.social

Live your life so people don’t hate you enough to let you put “yo man, I had no idea who that dude FDR was” in your politics newsletter.

Great thread! I’ve used this technique for ages. I learned quickly to not even look for a specific book but just to find the general area in the stacks with the relevant topic. Then I would browse. I do a similar thing in archives now. Pulling boxes to the right and left of what I’m looking for.

One of the greatest tricks that Donald Trump and Elon Musk ever pulled is to convince millions of people that DOGE is about government efficiency. It's about narcissistic, resentful destruction: The Death of Government Expertise. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Last night @60minutes.bsky.social opened an otherwise superb segment on Germany’s approach to online hate speech by saying “in the U.S., most of what’s said on online [social media] platforms is protected by the First Amendment.” No.The First Amend protects us against GOVT infringements on speech.

I am recruiting for postdoctoral and technician positions at UCSD. If anyone with relevant skills/interests has lost funding due to the anti-DEI jihad or the NIH purge, I’m open to discussion of ways we can try to help out.

seems like it is a big deal that the unifying ideology of the doge team is neo nazism

I wasn’t an Academy guy. Served with many who were, though. This is no way to train and educate the future leaders of the fleet.

worth saying again these these unilateral cuts are illegal. neither trump nor musk has the authority to unilaterally slash appropriated funds.

🧵 The news is awful! But for a teeny ray of light, here are 3 @richardscenter.bsky.social opportunities for Civil War Era scholars w/ deadlines in March & April 🗃️: 1. two predoctoral fellowships for ABDs 2. a non-residential fellowship for associate profs 3. an article workshop for junior scholars

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

the destruction of public services, the destruction of a robust public sphere, and the destruction of the societal production of knowledge (supported by the public, and meant to serve the public) all go hand-in-hand

A reminder: Vladimir Putin could end the war in Ukraine right now, just by ordering his soldiers to go home. No need for treaties or negotiations.
