Look at those "personal liberties and free markets" at work... Jeff should be proud.

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

This is the essence of it for me. Writing—and the reasoning that goes into it—is a key skill.

Firing up the meme machine:

There is a direct link between this thought and Hegseth’s cult of lethality, which is characterized by the inability to link mil objectives to desired pol outcomes.

The terminally online mind cannot comprehend this

On this topic: I asked my students to generate Perplexity summaries of sources for their research and then read the sources and critique the summaries, which was enlightening for all of us. Some summaries were "fine," some were wrong, some were ridiculous and brought in info not in the text /1

The idea that you could arrive at “precisely the information” you need prior to engaging with the material is such a flawed view of knowledge and how it is gained.

Damn. Just heard that a Minnesota lawmaker, Melissa Hortman, was assassinated, and looked them up. She was on here--this is the last post she wrote

The Israelis are calling this a "preemptive" strike. Whether you agree or disagree with this attack, these are not - from what we know tonight - "preemptive" strikes. The Israelis are using that word for a reason. Read on. /1

This is a thought-provoking post that aligns with what I’ve seen. AI can accelerate the exploration of software solutions and create more options for the Navy and other organizations. The right guardrails have to be in place, but there is a lot of potential.

Touched by all the wonderful thank you cards I received after speaking to a class of Norfolk Academy students about the World War II Pacific Theater. We touched on strategy, tactics, and technology. They asked some great questions. #NavalHistory

Describe your favorite movie in the most misleading way possible. College professor takes extended leave of absence and tries to rekindle an old flame.

🧵 My small country, Estonia, population 1.3 million sent 2003-2014 over 2500 soldiers. 9 were killed in the line of duty. 109 wounded, half of them so seriously they could no longer lead a normal life. In Iraq 2003-2009 we had more than 440 soldiers. 2 were killed. 18 seriously wounded. 1/n

Sentience is an exquisite consequence of the laws of physics, and the embodied mind of organisms shaped by millions of years of evolution is the remarkable product of a billions upon billions of failed experiments and dead ends and strange loops.

Speak up. It’s easy.

Never let them tell you one person cannot make a difference.

"Create contexts in which options can be discovered, evaluated and selected. These contexts themselves constrain the kinds, amounts and complexity of the things discovered." - @cyetain.com at #dddeu

Friends, followers, and colleagues: some professional news, as they say. After four wonderful years with the US Army War College, I resigned my position effective May 2, 2025. 1/

Excellent past two days with two #navalhistory lectures. One to a group of military officers and the other a class of middle school students. Great questions from both. Enjoyed discussing learning in the U.S. Navy and the Pacific War.

I am a Suicide Survivor and someone who has lost too many friends to it. My friends, allow me to tell you personally: YOU ARE WORTH IT. PLEASE STAY WITH US. There is always another way. Your situation is not unique. One of us has lived it, and we understand. Please ask anyone for help. We are here.

this @adambonica.bsky.social piece deserves to be read beside the yeoman work that @donmoyn.bsky.social and @pamherd.bsky.social have been doing. The dismantling of administrative expertise is one of those stories that is so big that pro journalists with beats find it hard to focus on or explain .

Just finished Marie von Clausewitz by Bellinger - it's phenomenal.

My observations on leadership: Be excellent to one another. The rest is details.

Not the same by any means, but I think this biological framing is useful for understanding how people act in large organizations. What seems like a grand plan from afar is often a series of short-term decisions channeled by local constraints.

Friend gave me a copy of the 16 May 1863 edition of Harper’s Weekly, and this editorial is fantastic

Highly recommend these great writers. Please let me know if you write on military affairs and I’ll add you to the list! go.bsky.app/7Ct4H4c

tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

Never a bad moment to note this fantastic starter pack of military historians on here. The breadth of it serves as a reminder of how much more sophisticated a field military history has become. We talk tactics, but we talk so much more than tactics.

Kagan is completely right. Using the shadow docket to OVERRULE nearly a century precedent is an extraordinary act.
