The "Penguincubator" or book vending machine launched by Allen Lane at Penguin/Bodley Head in 1937. For the price of a pack of cigarettes, you could get a novel. The machines were set up in busy spots in London, and the authors published aimed to raise the bar of what was available in paperback.

"30 km/h (20 mph) speed limits work. From Brussels to Bologna, recent evidence suggest that they work best at their simplest, when the limit applies across a whole city. In Bologna, road deaths have dropped by half. In Wales... deaths and serious injuries have fallen by more than a third."

Since he started at Crater Lake in January, Kevin Heatley has seen Crater Lake’s permanent workforce cut in half, and onboarding seasonal staff was delayed by a month. "Things are not OK," he said.

After almost two years of work led by Portland nonprofit Depave (including a spat with the city over convoluted zoning codes), an unused parking lot at a historically Black church in Cully is now a green oasis, complete with garden beds, a picnic area, play structures, and more.

A man tried to make a statement by burning 100 library books — the community responded by donating over 1,000 more. Book burners always lose in the long run. Reason, facts, and free thought can't be silenced. www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-n...
