seeing a lot of hate for the AI marking software but let’s be real if we embrace this it cd free up so much time todo important stuff, such as editing online learning environments, filling in extra paperwork invented this year, sitting in meetings abt unis ‘exciting’ plans something something growth

One of my new self-care habits is refusing to be patronised by AI-boosting men whose replies show they actually don’t know how gen/theft-AI works & what its limitations are.

they use Theft-AI to write essays, we use it to mark them. Either that’s the end of human learning or we collectively speak up, demonstrate skills, actually give a shit about teaching as a form of expertise & uni as more than just a career boost tick box exercise. I know what I expect to happen

Sunday random q: did you have a special name for a thorough sink wash? We called it Tops&Tails (face, armpits, groin, feet). Just reflecting on how I used to have them a lot as a kid (no shower until i was a teen) & again now because of the campervan adventires

You’d’a thought that at this big age i’d be immune to the disappointment of finding public figures have feet of clay on social media, but there are apparently still some exceptions.

Sometimes I get asked to define class in Britain. It’s genuinely a tough question. But one of my shorthand indicators is if your parent’s death would increase your capital or cost you money you don’t have.

So, “radical working class” author Kit de Waal blocked me for this extraordinarily mild & polite critique of her use of theft-based AI. Pls update your solidarity creatives lists accordingly 🤡

I don’t have this ref to hand as I’m on holiday - any leads #HistSTM ppl? I think it was a blog long read not an article

I've been running informal Redundancy Buddy groups over the last 6 months with UK uni staff at risk of dismissal. There are several key things people are shocked by which I'm sharing here so others who're precarious feel less alone and recognise what to prepare for. Please add your ideas. A thread 🧵

#ObjectOfTheWeek Inuit artist Gayle Kabloona has been in the news for calling out UK traveller's claim to be the first woman to cross Nunavut Island on foot (more here www.bbc.com/news/article...) Rather than focus on the news, I'd like to share some of her art @inuitartportal.bsky.social [1/5]

Gotta love a pub that commits to the bit (Oooof the alt text)

It's #DigitalFriday ! This is my routine appeal to #skystorians & all academics prepping for teaching to share any software, hardware, online resources (primary, secondary, teaching tools, blogs), tips and tricks that they've found useful this week! #AcademicSky (pls boost to any relevant feeds)

Oh, sure, Choline might be critical for cognitive performance, but have you considered that it might *also* take your man? www.bbc.com/future/artic...

Because women can recognise mansplaining bullshit from the asteroid belt.

Update: still having a lovely time, still being super productive (yesterday book outline, today, grant proposal based on book!), still mostly offline

No, AI, I do NOT think nuclear war is a good thing open.substack.com/pu... Google's AI is telling people that I am in favour of nuclear war. Because of course it is. This reveals yet another problem with AI that makes things harder for us all. #AI #Media #Writing

A good guide to the next great university scandal: they will be able to submit big groups of researchers to the 2029 Research Excellence Framework, get millions of your money, then sack all the staff and pocket their nice yearly income from you the taxpayer until c2036/37. wonkhe.com/blogs/portab...

Given the government is now looking at 'all options' for steel, as it's of 'huge strategic importance', here's a reminder of how localised steel employment (important though these jobs are) stacks up against HE as an employer and life float for numerous towns and cities in many neglected areas 👇

Academia sometimes feels uniquely designed to make people who are very good at lots of things feel that they are never good enough at any of them. (I applied for a promotion and didn’t get it.)

So, from all of this, it can be reasonably inferred that the universities of Bristol, Leeds, Essex and Exeter are not remotely safe institutions to work or study at for trans people.

Had to check but it is, in fact, freezing despite appearances. Have gone from zero to 5000 words of a book outline, 5 concrete chapters with additional abstracts and future plans. Amazing what 1.25 days of space, sun and peace can do

After decades of groundbreaking work at the intersection of science, medicine, environment, and visual culture, Gregg Mitman is retiring. A brilliant scholar, teacher, & storyteller—your impact stretches far beyond the classroom. #Thankyou, Gregg. 🌍🎥📚 #Retirement @uwmadison.bsky.social gmitman.com

Morning all. I am very off line because I am at a writing retreat & taking it seriously. First session went well (free wrote 1600 words) but I’m a bit worried I’ve started too hot & will have nothing for the next 10 sessions 😅

If you want to kill or seriously harm someone the best way to do it in the UK is with a car. The penalties are vastly lower than with any other weapon. We are #CarBrained

Some work venues are just better than others

Mind-blowing to think just how many people are ok with forcefully disappearing those they disagree with, but draw the moral line at loss in shareholder value. We’re a shit species

Experiencing the stark public transport inequality in Brum today. Door to door home to train station took 25 mins for 4 mile journey (inc 0.5 mile walk). 4 miles across suburbs at same time to work takes 50-70 mins (with less walking).

An actual Mosley being the face of ai advocacy in the uk really is just so on the nose in explaining how a danger of ai is embedded the worst social beliefs and prejudices

#MondayNetwork - a regular appeal to any #skystorians with intersecting interests: surviving climate change, environmental determinism, race science, exploration, acclimatisation & physiology, citizen science, Indigenous knowledge, & related topics to say hi or share link to your work! 🗃️

Horror: In conversations with both the RA and the Bodleian it certainly seemed that this was the reason Queen Victoria’s Journals Online was removed. I know the RA were doing everything possible to restore public access, but this sounds like the removal might be permanent?!
