It took just days after being humiliated by the largest protests in US history and by the anemia of his long-sought military parade for Donald to announce this new apparent(?) military operation against Iran, and I sincerely doubt those events are not at least partially linked.

We used to be able to go for _days_ without a new domestic or international crisis but no, no, voters thought it would be more exciting to bring a mushbrained sedition-backing convicted felon promising concentration camps.

It's not entirely inconceivable that we are, in fact, at war but neither we nor Congress will find out unless a US plane/drone gets shot down.

It’s probably worth noting one of the things written on this gun is also tattooed on the SecDef’s arm.

This ranting ham sandwich is in charge of our military and it remains unclear how much of what he says is real, how much is something he had a dream about, how much is wild misinterpretations of things he's been told, and how much is lies told to him by aides pursuing their own agendas.

After stumbling up plane stairs and dropping his papers, confusing Justin Trudeau with Stephen Harper and the UK with the EU, the elderly, confused Trump is going home early to rest, using unhinged threats to declare war against Iran as cover.

Good read. I'd add that 'distraction' claims are usually ploys to dodge things Dem leadership doesn't want to engage on, eg GOP corruption, authoritarianism, violence. But the 'distraction' language suggests _voters_ are wrong for caring about that stuff, which is a great way to look out-of-touch.

I don't think America is a stupider place than when I was a kid, but I do think the stupidity radiates farther. People sold very weird things in the back of comics and magazines, but you wouldn't see a truck-sized advertisement for x-ray specs on a random street corner.

This is genuinely quite a recent (last two decades) problem! the Enron guys went properly to jail jail; a lot of KPMG tax partners got dropped like a hot potato by their firm and only avoided jail by paying massive fines for selling aggressive tax schemes

It frustrates the hell out of me how the few remaining large progressive blogs seem to have morphed into poor imitations of news sites. Everything is just “look at this thing Trump did” with no analysis, attempt to shape the message, or support of wider actions. …

Utah voters: Are these really your values? Mike Lee is the best you can do?

Buncha evangelical weirdos finally got their chance to fight the antichrist and they're all "Woo! Go antichrist! I want his gold-colored phone!"

This isn't all of the story, but a surprisingly big part of the "fear" of Mamdani isn't actually that he'll institute full communism, it's that people's friends-and-influence groups will be demoted from their positions of authority

This guy clerked for Samuel Alito twice, including on the Supreme Court.

It's wild too that the press wholly ignores Senators just straight up lying to their constituents. We know exactly who this guy was and that Moreno is just making shit up. Bad enough they don't cover the protests honestly, they can't even report on Congress! That used to be an actual job!

When WSJ hires a Marxist columnist I’ll listen to them about ideological diversity.

The protests are nowhere to be found at all on the NYT homepage and merit only a tiny mention midway down the WaPo homepage. The NYT homepage does have three stories about Trump's parade and a story about, I kid you not, Kamala and the Clintons going to Huma Abedin's wedding to Alex Soros.

It is firmly in the “somebody’s making an active decision to downplay this” territory.

Trump's original vision for this was something that would rival Moscow's massive parades but it also had to go by his house and... the roads by the White House are not big enough for that. So now he looks like a dork in front of all the other dictators.

This cost $45 million dollars.

The photos coming from Trump’s birthday parade are just incredible. No one showed up.

LOL "outdated" miasma theory is pure fantasy dreamt up around 400 BC that's been dead in the legitimate medical and scientific communities since 1880

So the suspected republican assassin in the murder of a state legislator here in Minnesota and the attempted murder of another ran his own private security firm, and multiple members of his family were police. Someday people will accept that what those of us on the academic side are saying is true

Philly showin' up today

Donald Trump wants this violence. That's why he pardoned the insurrectionists who attacked Congress on Jan 6. That's why he put them back on the streets, and called them heroes, and why he's called up the Marines to 'liberate' a city that hates him. He wants it, he goads it, and he facilitates it.

The Minnesota assassinations, the attempted arson at Governor Shapiro's home, and the violent arrest of Senator Padilla are all straight out of the Jim Crow terrorism playbook. Same goes with cops aiming for journalists covering the ICE protests. None of these are new tactics, just a new iteration.

okay so we've got -- DHS goons handcuffing a U.S. Senator -- Marines in LA violating posse comitatus -- political assassinations in MN And that's just, like, the last couple of days

It's vital to emphasize that the GOP has been calling for violence against their political opponents for more than a decade now, led by Trump. The violence keeps escalating, and they keep doing it because they're getting results.

The neighborhood is getting ready for tomorrow

Just visited the federal government building in West L.A., which is being guarded by some very bored looking Marines. They and National Guard far outnumbered civilians outside the facility, which hasn’t been the site of any protests this past week.

I'm not sure this counts as an 'escape' so much as a 'four people leaned against a shoddily-built wall at once, causing it to give way and dumping them outside.'

LinkedIn is a freaking cult. Holy moly is that place unhinged.

Astute observers might note that this was also the strategy in 2024: ignore ballooning democratic crises and GOP corruption/extremism, evade the base, campaign on narrower economic cases. It quite specifically did not work and now things are much worse.

Stay tuned for "Operation Seize the Pickle Ball Court," establishing a beachhead for an assault on Westwoof Dog Park. Then everybody goes for ice cream.

If there aren't multiple Tiananmen Square moments I'm going to be very disappointed. It's such an obvious move. (But I also wonder if security is going to be so tight that you'll effectively only be able to watch this thing from the White House lawn.)
