ok sure - language of my post wasn’t quite as precise as it should have been, so thanks for correcting that.

I know I'm a stuck record, but these are all problems that badly need a secretary of state who is interested in the culture brief in any way and doesn't regard it as a) punishment assignment for some reason and b) doesn't use it to reheat their fixed ideas about the UK and society.

Many welcome things in this - a revival of Last Days and of the Grimes I didn’t get to see, a new Tosca in “war-torn modern-day Rome” and Covent Garden’s first Makropulos Case

(wigmore probably the most consistently cheap place - with fewest caveats - to listen to *any* music in London as an under 35. that you can rock up to majority of WH gigs for a fiver a couple of hours in advance is one of London’s few cheap thrills today)

I just pray that funders don’t see it as a means to cut more/not increase subsidy. You can definitely see the ‘well, look at wigmore hall!’ argument being deployed wholesale, regardless of being in historic centre of wealth and philanthropy etc.

A fantastically important postscript to this piece: David Graham asks Jeffrey Goldberg about possible retaliation, and Goldberg gives a perfect answer — with perfect swipes. www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

Surely some mistake - Petrenko here describes Shor as ‘one of the most gifted modern composers in terms of melody writing’ 🤪
