That’s actually the plot of Hotel California by the Eagles. Where have you been, Clive?

Crikey the optics of that exchange on Sky just now about the level of AFCON were… not good?

Of course. And they’ll also ignore the fact that even if from a technical perspective he’s not a *great* defender, from a tactical one he makes a massive defensive contribution through how opposition teams have to prepare for his passing and overall attacking threat.

Yup. The “dribbled past” stat is largely meaningless if — as was often the case — he still did enough to hold up the player and/or divert him into the path of a supporting defender and the outcome is then no end product. Team effort. Good graft from him all in all.

Revealing of Guardiola’s philosophical intransigence and the fact that it’s purely a recent competitive rivalry rather than anything truly primal that there was never even a hint of Liverpool getting bogged down in the quality-sapping emotional “occasion” scrappiness of the United and Everton games

This is it: for all the possession, for all the narrative, I was never actually especially concerned because they never really created a chance even approaching irresistible quality

Delighted with that win for many reasons, but not least because I — a 36-year-old London-based fan without the connections/resources to have been to Anfield before — will be there for the Newcastle game on Wednesday night and it’s going to be bouncing and “Now you’re gonna believe us” and all that

Random mid-match thought: loads of people were shitting on this home kit when it was revealed, but it’s good, and we’re going to win the league and make it iconic, so that’s nice.

Looked off to me in real time so was surprised it took as long as it did for Sky comms to confirm there was an ongoing VAR check about to confirm that

Eden Hazard though, right…?

Absorb the pressure, take the chances. That’s a first half of champions, mates.

11 out of 27 league games he has registered both a goal and an assist. Ridiculous.

Tempted to say that at 25G+16A already, this is bound to be the best all-round PL season by an attacker whatever the final numbers end up being, but I’m convinced Salah is coming for Henry’s (currently) standalone 20+20 season.

For once Robertson not mysteriously a yard too deep

LIVERPOOL HAVE A PLANNED CORNER ROUTINE AND IT IS GOOD

Some useful — and new to me — insight downthread here into the competence and ethics of Morgan McSweeney, quite apart from whatever you might make of his (lack of) politics and his power over the current Labour “project”, except to say that the former probably informs the later…

ALIEN ON STAGE is a really, really lovely documentary, in a similar vein to A BUCNH OF AMATEURS from a couple of years back. Fantastic to see it as a front page feature!

Projection models, bookies, *and* Liverpool fans who aren’t terminally debilitated by online brainworms…

Massively eases it. The absolute worst that can happen is that we end the weekend in exactly the same position we started it, but with one fewer game for Arsenal to close the gap.

Had a feeling West Ham would pull off something like that today. Eight points clear. 12 games each to play. I’d hate to be one of the bed-wetting LFC fans out there…

Dont read the guardian’s interview with Esther Ghey it neglects any discussion of transphobia and instead focuses on the dangers of online in quite a victim-blamy way its quite upsetting to read

This was my thought too about James’s anti-JSO piece. Also: he doesn’t seem to have any counter to JSO and adjacent activists who would look at this highlighted paragraph and say “Well, exactly. I have engaged with the difficulties and trade-offs and think they would have been worth it. What now?”

Everyone who accurately predicted the rise of this is and was considered a monstrous crank, by everyone now caught on the backfoot by it. I don’t know why, combination of ignorance and embarrassment. Probably lots of things, doesn’t really matters.

Two Liverpool forwards with honking misses tonight. Predictable that all the stick is going to the confidence-free lad seemingly everyone thinks is shite anyway, rather than the one they call “slotter”. (Not that I think it’s particularly worth giving anyone stick — misses happen — but it’s telling)

Yeah I can really do without the bed-wetting

Presumably Szoboszlai back in the wide left role he moved into last time out — hopefully he gets the opportunity to be more advanced in it, the way he was when he played there loads at Leipzig, taking his man on and getting shots off. Could be fun!

Okay I am sorry can we not just print Elon Musk marketing copy that says "smartest AI on earth" when it really should say "large language model that is better at the benchmarks tests they made up specifically for LLMs where they can literally train on both the questions and their answers

Think it’s massively unlikely we play like that again, tbh. Always thought it was likely we’d have a battle on our hands today after the physical and emotional drain of the derby, and that getting a win by whatever means was all that mattered. Now we can settle, freshen up, and get back to normal

Much more likely that this is what Trent being rusty after an injury — as seen several times before — looks like?

If Konaté isn’t on a booking, there’s no way anyone says he should be booked for the second challenge. People just love controversy for controversy’s sake.

Once again astonished by the propensity of a particular otherwise rational and insightful Arsenal-supporting poster for total head loss in matters of football involving Arsenal and/or Liverpool. Step back, breathe some fresh air, touch grass, hug a loved one, whatever you need to let it go

Absolutely Jokerfying scenes here, as the lads again explain - in positive terms - that Starmer’s Labour was always a bleak fraud going all the way back to the start of the Labour Racism Scandal. Also, the PM is a clueless ambition monster and may as well be a cardboard cutout of himself.

Tazos!

The argument appears to be that refugees will be allowed to *apply* for citizenship, but that they will be refused as standard unless they can detail "exceptional" circumstances. Which a) is quite clearly not what the Refugee Convention requires and b) poses the question of what "exceptional" means.

Not that it should need to get to this level of arguing the point — because as Dan says, no downside, just upside — but we’ve (as far as I’m aware) never said “bowlsman”, and long since moved away from common usage of “fieldsman”, so the suggestion that “batter” is in any way problematic is nonsense

This is it, right. The beauty/shame of my position as a Liverpool fan not from or in the city is that I can look at what’s happened tonight and quite easily and rationally go “Fuck, that’s annoying, but what an incredible position we’re still in”, and not totally lose my mind

Once again for the people at the back: Starmer and his Labour Party have repeatedly told you they are; it’s well past time to believe them

This is like Kendrick and Drake if both of them were Drake.
