Same here! And yet those two years were STILL miserable and traumatic.
The middle school my kids attend(ed) is legitimately amazing and it's because of a principal who prioritizes students emotional needs and community above everything else.

Around where I live the argument they make is that public facilities—roads, schools, etc--are not able to "handle" the growth. But our local school system's planning dept is clear that more new students come from turnover of existing housing than from new housing.
So, yeah, bad faith.

Do you understand now why you came this way?

I had a lot of friends angry at me because I said their time that weekend was better spent volunteering for good political candidates then going down to DC for the lolz. We can’t be sincere about democracy until we lose it, I guess.

The Orioles also have the new student membership program offering $10 tickets to several games each month. Only for students 18+ but presumably younger teens can still convince their parents to purchase tix (at least this is true for my family)

The one thing that we had in the early 00s that we won't get back is vibrant local media. The work I did got picked up by local and regional papers (including the Washington Post) and local TV and this coverage was essential. That coverage is gone now, further exacerbating the problems.

Wow. Thank you for writing this. I got bit by the local politics bug and started organizing in the early 00s. I used to joke that things would've been so much easier if we had social media, but lately I've been feeling many of the things you express in this piece and trying to figure out what now.

The overwhelming majority of Democratic politicians are holding office outside of Washington, DC. Those are the Dems I'm talking about and why I posted initially--boards of education, city councils, state legislatures, like Montana's where there was a glimmer of hope against fascism this week.

I feel like I've explained myself reasonably well.
DC Dem leadership = feckless, spineless, and counter-productive
Dem party = messy, often misguided, and essential to winning the fight against fascism
My issue is with conflating these two, which obscures opportunity to a build better party.

Maybe I, like many of the feckless Dem leaders, am blindly wedded to a dead institution or to the past.
But the point of my first post is that there are many Democrats who are ready for this fight and we should be finding, elevating, and supporting them (rather than abandoning the whole party)

Yes, and they deserve this scorn and admonishment. Many are ill-equipped to deal with this particular fight and some don't even realize the scale, scope, or stakes of it. I also think that we need a strong opposition coalition to fight fascism and our best hope for that is a better Democratic Party.

I'm willing to be more charitable to my ostensible allies than I am to my obvious enemies. I do not hold them in equal contempt but I understand why others do or would.
We don't really have a playbook for how to win this fight, but it's going to take a big, unified coalition.

I'm also radicalizing, but it is 100% directed towards fascists. I'm certainly frustrated with feckless Democrats, especially those with power and big platforms. I'd like to see some step aside and also want the anti-fascist coalition to be as big as possible because it will take all of us to win.

Sounds like an opportunity to bring in some fresh Democratic leadership.

“Gatekeeping” lol
Glad to hear you’re engaged in local politics. Even if we disagree about some things we’re all trying to fight the same fascists.
comment in response to

Without googling, can you name any members of your local board of education? City or town council?
Not trying to be snarky but really don’t know how we fight “literal fucking fascism” by radicalizing against ourselves, especially when we’re only focused on the tiny sliver of democrats in DC.

I'm on board with this and would love to see a similar or larger boycott of billionaire-owned social media platforms. I'm less concerned about what Target is doing to undermine democracy than I am with Meta.

"Master of the Senate" should be required reading for Democratic politicians, activists, and voters.

That's what I chose. Hoping the message gets through, but at the end of the day, the only feedback we can give that has any chance of mattering is the kind where they no longer get our money.

Man, the Washington Post has been a part of my life forever. I delivered them as a teen and worked for their local papers in my 20s. Read every column by Thomas Boswell (and some others) and their local weather coverage is truly fantastic.
The paper I loved is gone and now so am I.

I've been thinking about this a lot after losing my grandfather last year. Gracious to all, well-mannered, boisterous laugh, he always did the dishes/chores and regularly expressed gratitude for his wife (my grandmother), children, and all others in his family. His death feels symbolic to me.

Liganore converts on multiple fourth downs and get a TD. 21-14 with 3:10 to go b in 3rd quarter.

Scorps receive to start the half and drive 90 yards down the field to score. Highlight play was a 50 yard run from THE Isaac Ramsey to put them at the 3 for the easy TD. 14-14

At the half Liganore leads 14-7. I don’t know who gets the ball to start the second half because I got here late

It’s like this all over Columbia too. Kind of fun, and kind of annoying. BGE handles street lights.
