This picture may haunt me to the end of my days. It is an ICE agent taking an axe to the car window of an immigrant in New Bedford, MA. Not far from where I sit now. An immigrant with no criminal record was abducted by this smiling man. An axe taken to a car window and to our democracy. 1/ #MomSky

Tim Snyder: "The president defied a SCOTUS ruling to return a man who was mistakenly sent to a gulag in another country, celebrated the suffering of this innocent person, and spoke of sending Americans to foreign concentration camps." snyder.substack.com/p/state-terror

In the MAGA imagination, America is simultaneously threatened by outsiders – immigrants, invaders who are “poisoning the blood” of the nation, as Trump has put it – and by the “enemy within.” The core promise of Trumpism is to purge those inherently connected “threats.” Utterly terrifying.

This is a big deal, mainly because it is a very thorough piece of work, but also because the sensitivity of ice sheet models are still highly dependent on important details of the topography and conditions at the bottom of the ice sheet that remain highly uncertain.

Temperature anomalies of the troposphere and lower to mid stratosphere relative to a 1961 - 1990 baseline, updated to February 2025.

This is key: Focusing on Trump's "contradictions" tends to perpetuate the idea that he doesn't have any actual convictions. It's true he doesn't care about specific policy positions. But underneath that "flexibility" lies a very consistent worldview of grievance, domination, and hierarchies.

The question we must now ask: How much damage does the US want to do to Ukrainians? on.ft.com/4bpsI6T

Firings of probationary workers at NOAA thoughout the agency -- climate offices, yes, but also meteorologists at the National Weather Service.

New: Layoffs underway of probationary employees at @noaa.gov Unclear so far how many were exempted for public safety reasons at the Nat'l Weather Service, NOAA Satellites and other units. www.axios.com/2025/02/27/l...

A sea level update.

Of course it’s a coup. Miss the obvious, lose your republic. open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p...

I have asked Deepseek about the legality of Musk's actions. It's a decent summary.

First priority of fascists: destroy science and independent thought. They are not wasting time.

Fellow NSA - National Security Agency veterans. Look at what’s happened at the National Cryptologic Museum. They covered up with brown paper the photos of Women in American Cryptology. All in response to President Trump’s anti-diversity executive order.

LA is in a high fire risk region & fire weather conditions are complex. So we @wwattribution.bsky.social looked at many lines of evidence. All show: our burning of fossil fuels increased the likelihood of such extreme fire weather conditions www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

Has the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) weakened over the last decades? In our new study, we combine state-of-the-art CMIP6 models and observation-based estimates of the air-sea heat flux in the North Atlantic to show that the AMOC has not declined since the 1960s! 🌊

Santa Ana Wind (SAW) driven fires do occur in January but typically are not large and damaging. Figure below shows number of SAW fires for 1950-2020. These SAW fires are driven by wind speed and drought. www.publish.csiro.au/WF/WF23190

ERA5 global monthly 2m temperature anomalies relative to '51 - '80. November 2024 finishes 1.40°C above that baseline.

Look who has joined Elonias cesspit.

We have a new paper out in @science.org today, led by Helge Goessling from #AWI: The recent global temperature surge in 2023 was intensified by a record-low planetary #albedo 👉 doi.org/10.1126/scie... @thomasjung.bsky.social @ecmwf.bsky.social This is what we found (🧵1/8)

How did global air temperatures vary before 1850? We can now answer this from direct instrumental observations. The new GloSAT dataset is under review! Morice et al.: essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es...

New study presents a possible explanation for part of the 2023 temperature surge, a reduction in low-level cloud cover. www.awi.de/en/about-us/...

I've made a starter pack of people who work on the stratosphere/middle atmosphere and/or often post about the stratosphere, including forecasts of the polar vortex. Please do suggest anyone I've missed – quite hard to keep up with everyone on here now! go.bsky.app/MxwzdEi

"The U.S. betrayed its climate leadership, and the world is already suffering" -- my new op-ed in the @latimes.com: www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...

We're not doing well.

On The Climate Brink: Stop emissions, stop warming: A climate reality check This is a crucial point because it determines how much warming is already "locked in" and effectively unavoidable. The answer is very little warming is locked in. Also, this is our 100th post! www.theclimatebrink....

Six regions in the Mediterranean exhibit heightened exposure to changing climate conditions (climate change hotspots) with increased min & max temperatures, high nighttime temperatures, decreasing annual rainfall alongside, and increased extreme rainfall events. 🧪 doi.org/10.1038/s415...

Wild. This paper measured the political effects of a major storm that hit the mountains of Italy in 2018. Despite widespread comms linking it to climate change, the 'green vote' was virtually unaffected. However, the far right party gained support by claiming responsibility for disaster relief.

Nichols: You have the makings of a not so slow motion authoritarian takeover of the United States government. And people ought to be really concerned about this.

Bluesky is winning because both twitter and threads have gone out of their way to make their platforms inhospitable to reputable journalists and news. @kattenbarge.bsky.social reports: www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-...
