Antidepressants can cause severe harms for some - akathisia, suicidal urges, dependence, PSSD. I nearly lost my son to an adverse reaction.
I'm trying to understand why informed consent so often doesn't happen, and how this can change.

I think there’s some evidence that nicotine might be helpful for Tourette’s and OCD. Here’s an example. Is quite old.

"A video has been made in Australia describing patient experiences. Doctor-Patient relationships have suffered as a consequence of doctors apparently not understanding the bewildering effects of these drugs, esp when ‘discontinued’" youtu.be/HnG6om8ufrQ?...

Hyperbolic tapering is safer, but is no guarantee that you will come through without injury after taking psychiatric drugs.
The only way to guarantee safety is to not take them in the first place. Patients need to be told this when the drugs are offered (and they need alternatives).

It depends on whether it is a misdiagnosis of SSRI-induced hypomania, which can be completely cured by stopping the drug.
Perhaps prevalence of ‘bipolar’ would be lower if doctors were educated about adverse drug reactions.

Doctors need to be educated about the side-effects of SSRIs, which can include hypomania, before we ramp up the drug treatment of people who have received a diagnosis of bipolar.

Because there’s money to be made, and it provides a quick, cheap, response for people looking for help with complex, difficult to resolve, life problems.

Patients experience injustice by the fact of the power-imbalance that exists in all clinical situations. Their rights to informed consent, or for being believed when things go wrong, are routinely neglected. This is multiplied if a MH diagnosis has ever been applied.

How many of the poor souls who are soon to have their benefits cut are disabled by the drugs that the doctors keep prescribing to them?

My son was prescribed antidepressants when he was experiencing stress from workplace burnout and a difficult relationship. What disease did the doctor think she was treating?
Her prescription led to a 2-year prescribing cascade. My son became unable to function and nearly lost his life.

Informed consent is routinely neglected in UK general practice. Patients are offered antidepressants without mention of the risks of severe and long lasting harm. PSSD is one such harm, but they’re also not told about akathisia, suicidal urges, withdrawal etc etc

Especially if a patient or their family member dares to ask why treatment has been going on for years and they’re only getting worse.
