We started DMing back and forth more often, about more topics than just the fic. We really hit it off and by Thanksgiving we had each other's numbers saved in our phones and would text pretty much constantly. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Before Thanksgiving, S paid me a house call.

So it was a surprise to both me and EB when I posted a video reading a snippet from my fic in which S has a monologue. I used a Southern accent that just Felt Right™️. "The accent, the pacing, the cadence, everything is on point, I'm so impressed," EB commented. In a DM, she admitted to being shook.

Mind you, I had never been to New Orleans or Acadiana, never met anyone from there, and was only mildly interested in the place as a concept before the fall of 2023. I thought the 504 was neat, but I've never been one of those "it's calling me home" girlies. That's changed now, obviously.

It was important for me to get S's character right. They have a specific way of talking and interacting with the world in the source material, so I'd send snippets and ideas back and forth with EB, and she was always very encouraging. "Wow, you've got a really natural intuition for how they sound!"

More background: I'm still married, though currently separated from my spouse. At the time, I was unhappily married. We went to a lot of couples' counseling and really tried to make it work. The fic was definitely a way for me to distance myself from him, though I would have denied it then.

For privacy's sake, we'll call her EB and the character I asked to borrow S. If you're on spiritual tiktok, you've probably seen her videos a time or two, especially if you're into New Orleanian folklore and stories. I'm not going to give any more details than that. This isn't a name & blame thread.

A little more than a year ago, I was deep in the writing process for a Good Omens fan fic. This thing had me by the *throat*. Hours upon hours a day writing. I reached out to a fellow author on TikTok to ask if I could borrow one of her characters from her books for the fic. She said yes.

So, just to set minds at ease up top: I am currently safe, relatively sane, and mostly stable. Some of the events that happened over the course of the last year involve the supernatural, unexplainable, and ineffable. I am not and was not in a state of spiritual psychosis (my therapist agrees!).

Thanks, I needed that laugh. :3 pls tell Chani she's a good girl who doesn't need to be useful if she doesn't want to be!

A ton of meta-connected apps (Spotify, Chani) are struggling to load for me today too.

Hey, we'll take still kicking! The last few months have been A Lot™️ but deeply transformative, magical, and necessary for my personal growth. Sometimes it feels like dying to learn how to live, you know?

Tony Bourdain. I got calls and texts from friends and family members as though I'd lost a close relative. I was fairly distraught for weeks after and he's got a place on my ancestor altar.

Yeah, I am Not Normal about this album much in the way I'm also currently Not Normal about Good Omens but "Butchered Tongue" made me weep bc it reminds me so much of Tony Bourdain (eternal hero).

Yeah, I'm thankfully pretty good at going for walks and stuff and seeing friends in real life, according to one of my other author friends this is fairly typical for a first draft of a novel length work 😅

Thanks Je! I thought so too - wasn't even trying for good composition here tbh but it happened anyway 🥰 hope today is falling softly on you!

Well, depending on where you're staying - New Haven style pizza is weird-good and worth a trip to go find it.

Yeah, there's an AO3 link somewhere on my profile I think, but it can also be found at bit.ly/gofic if you want to give it a shot. The first chapter is actually the weakest so far but if you give it a chance it gets better!

Coming to this late, but I'm currently about 20,000 words deep drafting a Good Omens fanfiction and it's been a decade since I've been this invested in seeing a story through to the end, and that's pretty fuckin' magic, I think.

The radar map is just all red and yellow over the nearest hundred miles or so. It's massive. Storms make me weirdly giddy so I'm just gonna sit and sip coffee and watch it!

If a task is feeling overwhelming, break it down to yourself like you're trying to teach it to someone who's never done it before.

Lol, I reference the "should have been an email" thing a few sentences ahead, but that could work if I switch some things around!
