This could become a trend. At my university we are making offers but I wonder about committing to e.g. 4-5 years of funding at this point given the uncertainty. #scicomm 🧪

Nevertheless, I still see million dollar homes for sale in Grand Isle, Louisiana which is right at sea level and already getting regularly inundated. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/o...

Fun! About 5 years ago my old house I still own and Airbnb in Illinois was used as a movie set for a low budget horror film. I had given up on it, but it’s finally coming out. Now I’ll know why there were chicken feathers everywhere youtu.be/KTBty_tgrEk?...

Does anyone have incite on the funding levels for NSF, NIH, NASA etc in these house budgets being negotiated. Assuming dismal.

We need to get a lot better FAST at explaining the importance of well-funded basic science. Any big discovery made in the last century would have been impossible without a mountain of basic research that came before it. You can't build the penthouse without a solid foundation #scicomm 🧪

Sickened by abuse of power, denial of science, and hate that are spewing from DC. Using my words to push back. Urge you to do the same. Craft letters to the editor, write opinion pieces, speak out.💙🧪📚. Here's my latest attempt to get science back in the conversation. undark.org/2025/01/23/o...

I'm particularly concerned about young researchers and the consequences for science if they lack proper support. We must advocate for strong science funding to keep the U.S. at the forefront of global innovation. In their terms, this drives prosperity. #scicomm 🧪 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

The loss to our scientific capability as a country from this period will be deep. Please call your Congress members, let them know you support science.

@holdenthorp.bsky.social has great quotes here. "At stake is the basic model that has underpinned America’s modern scientific leadership". Absolutely. We need to educate on the role of basic science in making the big discoveries. The Penthouse doesn't get built without the foundation #scicomm 🧪

Finally some science-focussed action with enough of a lead time to organize. Let's make it a huge turnout #scicomm 🧪

Science/academia are under siege. Slashed funding from NIH, NSF, and NASA, etc.—plus loss of Pell Grants—will cripple universities. Next, massive endowment taxes aim to deliver the final blow. Research and education are on the line. Call your representatives. Spread the word. Take action. #scicomm 🧪

I can get behind building more Ice Breakers. This has been a need for a long time. But does no one see the complete contradiction of climate change denial and saying we need ice breakers to dominate the Arctic as shipping opens up there? #SciComm 🧪 www.msn.com/en-us/news/w...

Truth.

#scicomm 🧪Just one of many areas of science and technology the U.S. will now concede leadership to China with the many proposed cuts to funding www.huffpost.com/entry/china-...

#Scicomm 🧪 Call your congressional reps! "Congress will have the final say on NSF’s budget...it’s far from clear that Trump will be able to achieve reductions at NSF anything close to the rumored magnitude." tinyurl.com/5sz5v9fv

5 calls now has an app that helps with your scripts and finding phone numbers. I just called all 3 of my people and the representative said they are getting a LOT of calls, which is awesome! EVERYONE should call! This takes < 5 min of your day. #democracy

It's unlikely (and probably inadvisable) for college leaders will be part of the resistance. But they can provide wartime leadership for their campuses. My piece in @insidehighered.com www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

My cartoon on the questionable practise of trusting winter predictions to a groundhog when scientists’ climate predictions are called into question. Almost as questionable as my drawing of a groundhog!

(Part of the) Message I am sending out to my local (GOP) reps. Reducing funding for science and engineering allows China to take more of a lead than they already have. We should be increasing funding for the sake of our future prosperity. Don't let China dominate in this critical area. #scicomm 🧪
