correct it's best to get it to compile on your os of choice on the command line and then use your choice of editor.
I do use vscode for my editing, but compiling/flashing/debugging is all command line (cmake, gcc, gdb)
I haven't set it up on windows in a hot minute though, it's smooth on Linux.

Grew up working on my father's Porsches, it's not as terrible as people on the internet spell it out to be.
They make it seem like it's the worst ever when in reality they are sometimes more complicated.
Sometimes their designs make sense and other times..."how did they make that decision". Lol
