Mass firings have started at the National Weather Service, including people in critical roles. Cutting waste is great. Mindlessly taking a sledgehammer to a valuable, life-saving public service is stupid. All the know-it-alls who said we were fabricating this threat can shut up now. Thanks.

Radar images suggest center of #Cyclone #GARANCE has crossed #Reunion & is now rapidly pulling away. Data from RUN ( airport on island's N coast) show wind has shifted & air pressure is now rapidly rising. Peak sustained (10-min) wind from this station was 58 knots—but gusts reached 115 knots.

Outer rainbands of #Cyclone #GARANCE are now sweeping #Reunion. Cyclone's core will reach island later this morning, accompanied by dangerous gusts over 95 knots, heavy rain, & extremely rough surf. COMPLETE PREPARATIONS NOW & REMAIN INDOORS THIS MORNING.

Dangerous #Cyclone #GARANCE is approaching French territory of #Reunion (pop. ~896K). System has strengthened overnight—now equivalent to Cat-3 hurricane. Center will pass near or over island in ~24 hours. COMPLETE PREPARATIONS & RETREAT TO YOUR SAFE SPACE BEFORE DARK TONIGHT.

Hey hey from IBS 2025 in Vegas! Here workin' it for James Hardie. This siding looks gorgeous, but what gets me excited is the DURABILITY. This stuff is HURRICANE TOUGH and so much more: resistant to moisture, mold, rot, termites, and even fire. Bam! 👊

There are several cyclones in Southern Hemisphere right now, but lead story is Cyclone GARANCE. Computer models all show it turning S & striking French territory of Reunion (pop. ~896K) early Friday, and it could be equivalent to Cat-3 hurricane when it gets there. Prepare now.

Cold, clear dawn at Hurricane House in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. Currently 28°F (-2°C). Pink sky hovering above the Gulf. May this be the last of the winter here.

10 years ago today, Cyclone MARCIA blasted Queensland, Australia. Storm was Cat 5 Oz/Cat 4 US scale. Extreme tree blowdown happened near landfall, with Yeppoon seeing significant damage. MARCIA was one of a trio of great Queensland cyclones in a single decade (with LARRY in 2006 & YASI in 2011).

See that thing over Coral Sea? BoM calls it Tropical Low 22U; JTWC calls it Invest 93P; I call it butt ugly. Computer models are all over the place with it, showing everything from cyclone in Far North Queensland to ugly junk down near Brisbane to fish storm. Bottom line: Gotta watch it.

My 2024 chase season was nuts. I penetrated 10 hurricane eyes (one of them twice) across 6 nations around the globe. Here's the whole thing in 90 seconds. WATCH: youtu.be/pRg9k3Mn7MU?...

#Cyclone #ZELIA is making its long-awaited thrust into #Australia. Center has crossed sparsely-populated stretch of coast near De Grey. Fortunately, there are few people or structures in ZELIA's intense core. Port Hedland, well W of core, is reporting 43 knots gusting to 59.

Overnight, #Cyclone #ZELIA wobbled E, which unfortunately increases the chance of Port Hedland #Australia getting a direct impact. ZELIA will cross the coast tonight. If the center passes close enough, winds in town will gust up to a whopping 175 knots. RUSH CYCLONE PLANS TO COMPLETION NOW.

Dawn reveals intense #Cyclone #ZELIA ready to pounce on the Pilbara. BoM now forecasting gusts up to whopping 155 knots near center as it crosses coast Friday. Exact track hard to predict, but folks from Karratha to Port Hedland need to COMPLETE PREPARATIONS TODAY, BEFORE DARK. Dangerous situation.

The very latest satellite images suggest #Cyclone #ZELIA is developing a dreaded "pinhole eye"—a feature which usually suggest significant intensification. And radar imagery supports this impression. Fasten your seatbelts. Especially folks in Port Hedland #Australia.

#Cyclone ZELIA is strengthening as it approaches Pilbara region of Western Australia. It's getting "that look" to it. BoM forecasts landfall near Port Hedland Friday with gusts to 120 knots. But spaghetti models are "frizzed out," suggesting wide range of possible tracks. Dangerous situation.

Breezy, warm, & humid in the Bay overnight. Hum of crickets. Feels like winter on the Gulf Coast is over. ❤️

Invest 96S isn't in any hurry to organize off coast of Western Australia. It still looks scrambled, & computer models give it mixed prognosis. BoM forecasts it to move SW & cross coast E of Port Hedland as strong cyclone Friday. But given uncertainty in models, wide range of scenarios are possible.

Invest 96S looks like it's trying to do something. Models give mixed prognosis, but some hint at strong cyclone threatening Western Australia coast this week. BoM's forecast brings hurricane-strength cyclone to coast E of Port Hedland in 4-5 days. Folks in Pilbara: keep an eye on this.

Heavy fog in the Bay last night. The waiter remarks, "How'd it go from blue skies today to this? Hmmm?" He's got that look in his eyes. Like he's suspicious. I sense crazy talk coming. I shut it down: "It was clear today. A weather system moved in. Now it's foggy." No more crazy this week.

Data recap of last week's historic winter weather at Hurricane House. Highlights: 7 consecutive days with below-freezing temps, 8 inches of snow 21 Jan, low of 12.4°F 22 Jan. Truly extreme values for station one block from Gulf. Data were collected by my ultra-accurate Campbell Scientific station.

A tropical low (Invest 96P) is just offshore of Cairns in Australia. It'll linger a few days, moving erratically & bringing gales & heavy rain to Queensland communities. It *could* develop, but system is not well-organized (per radar/satellite imagery), and computer models aren't loving it.

Like most folks who live on it, I just call it "the Gulf." But when I need to be more explicit, I'm gonna keep calling it the Gulf of Mexico. I'm traditional. If you're going to call it something else, you go right ahead. As a red-blooded American, I celebrate freedom of expression: yours & mine.

Very high winds from Storm #EOWYN are raking Ireland, with many stations reporting gusts well over hurricane force. But stations in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, & Wales have also reported gusts to hurricane force. If you're in impacted areas, STAY INDOORS, AWAY FROM WINDOWS.

Storm #EOWYN is approaching British Isles. Will be major wind event across region Friday. Met Eireann forecasts gusts over 130 km/h (70 knots) in Ireland, but peak gusts may far exceed that. Met Office forecasts gusts up to 100 mph (85 knots) in parts of UK. Be safe. These winds will be dangerous.

Walk from Hurricane House to the Gulf at dawn. Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, on 22 January 2025.

Went for a walk around the Bay this morning. Temps still in the teens; roads frozen over; Gulf absolutely radiant. The Campbell Scientific dudes gave me this hawt scarf at AMS last week. I thanked them and tucked it away on a closet shelf, thinking I'd never use it. Lolz.

Snow stole the headlines—but there's also what is (for the Gulf Coast) extreme cold. My morning low in Bay Saint Louis was 12.4°F (-10.9°C). Other locations not as close to the Gulf were in the single digits.

After Tuesday's storm I measured many samples on front & back lawns. Values ranged 6-9 in. On front lawn, fairly far from house, I found consistent 8s, so I'm going with storm total of 8 in for Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. If that's correct, this event is solid No. 2 for top snows here.

The end of an historic day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Never thought Hurricane House would be looking like this. But contrary to rumors, I ain't changing the name to Sneaux House (as the locals would say).

Woke up to this strange view. The window above my bed. Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi.

On Tuesday, Coastal Mississippi will not get above freezing. Low temps will be in the teens—with 3-5 inches of snow. Crazy stuff. Right now it's 27.8°F at Hurricane House—the first of 5 nights below freezing. My Campbell Scientific weather station is gonna collect lots of interesting data this week.

#Cyclone #SEAN has intensified to a Cat-4 cyclone (or Cat-3 hurricane.) Earlier, it produced gales across coastal communities. Fortunately, it stayed offshore & now it's moving away from Western #Australia. But, later in the week its extratropical remnants may recurve & bring storminess to Perth.

A #cyclone is developing near Western #Australia, just off the Pilbara. It's somewhat well-organized, through core is broad. Should move parallel to coast & stay offshore. Still, vigorous trailing rainband is bringing rough wx to coastal communities, which are under Cyclone Warning.

Postponing a trip to L.A. because of this snow thing. Kind of embarrassed about it. But I'd sort of like to get a pic of Hurricane House with snow-covered lawn—not because I dig snow, but because I dig freak shows.

Christmas in January. ♥️ Got some sexy new equipment from Campbell Scientific. 👊 Included are BaroVue 10s (extremely accurate barometer) & Aspen 10s (top-grade datalogger, comms device, & power source all in one). This is really gonna up my game collecting high-quality data in hurricanes. Excited!

Hey hey! I'm back at #AMS20205 this afternoon! At the Campbell Scientific booth. They're the folks behind the state-of-the-art weather station at Hurricane House. Come & say hey. 👊 It's been great meeting a bunch of you these last couple of days!
