Scrapping the £200 shoplifting limit, enabling every shop theft to be triable in the Crown Court, together with assaulting a retail worker, is well-meaning but hopeless. The Crown Court is clogged up with lower level offences, and we can’t even use all of the existing courtrooms.

My local Crown Court is Leicester. It is one of the most utilised I know. It regularly sits 7 or even 8 courts and yet now fixes trials where the defendant is on bail, a year away from the first hearing. Whilst that is sadly not unusual, it is a dreadful indictment of where we are now.
