It felt like a Mafia shakedown

The state has been captured and is being stripped for parts, folks. www.cnn.com/2025/02/27/b...

This is bullshit @safety.bsky.app . Heads of state and billionaires surely require a different standard, specifically to allow for political satire? And especially in this context, where said satire is political protest by employees facing mass layoffs

I know that condescension & shame won't move many supporters of these mass endorsement policies - certainly not the hardcore believers, nor the tacit supporters - but I stand firm in my beliefs that ethnonationalism is atrocious & border security panic harms us all. This is indefensible.

What if it's not "nihilism." What if it is a realistic assessment of the state of play? What if these times call for something other than legal mobilization?

Damn right. Don't soft-pedal the message.

Every single Democratic governor and attorney general needs to do this -- if only to make it clear to voters *right now* that the firings and funding freezes that are about to hurt their states badly are the work of Trump-Musk in Washington. Get ahead of this now, or get blamed for it later.

Hochul has terrible judgment and political instincts when it comes to wielding the discretion of executive power. Censoring higher ed is not what is needed right now, though I do think academics need to up our game on translating timely ideas into new languages & terminologies.

Excited to learn that I'll be a part of two sessions at @schoolofdata.nyc this year: a workshop by the CUNY PIT Lab, & a panel housing data & scholarship, with amazing colleagues from @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social and @cunygcdi.bsky.social #opendata #civictech #pitech @beta.nyc #nycSOdata #SWTech

This vote was to start the process of the cuts. It WILL come back for a final vote. There are some chances to slow or potentially stop it. Need constant pressure on GOP Focus on GOP swing seats & key committees. Energy & Commerce is where the Medicaid fight will go down. Ways&Means for tax fight.

I am seeing the occasional mention of "working people" in relation to things like Medicaid and SNAP. No, shut the fuck up. Everyone deserves healthcare and food to eat.

BREAKING NEWS: Amazon still sucks! The greedy online bookseller announced it will curtail readers' access to ebooks they've *already* bought. Good news is, ALL the ebooks on our site are DRM-free and always will be. AK ebooks always 50% off! 🧐 Bezos, who? https://www.akpress.org/downloads.html

🚨 Looking for travel funding to AAG in Detroit next month? The Economic Geography Specialty Group still has two Graduate Student Travel Awards worth $500 each available. Just submit an application through the form by March 8th. Please share widely! cc: @econgeog.bsky.social

Brutal stuff

Looks like one of the smaller credit ratings agencies has downgraded the United States from 'positive' to 'neutral' if you're wondering how the whole "threatening to randomly default on debts and cancel contracts" strategy is going

Considering how racist Coeur d'Alene is known to be, it's kind of wild that they rebuked Lear Asset Management at all (the private security firm employing those dudes who assaulted that woman during the town hall), let alone revoked their operating license. (Original image reposted with alt text)

Hypergroyperfication

Feeling the long arc of my history in NYC: the many activist groups & community organizations I've overlapped (& sometimes worked) with. The tech-focused circles & communities I'm often in now environmental justice is often an afterthought. @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social @humanitiescuny.bsky.social

The man who should be NYC's acting Mayor right now. Really inspiring talk. I fondly remember his "moonshot" speech at Bernie's Prospect Park rally in 2016.

“Two sources familiar with the matter, including a Trump administration official, tell Rolling Stone that the replies to the recent Musk OPM email have been flooded with pranks and, in the words of the Trump official, “very rude” emails listing fake, vulgar “accomplishments,”…

Our university president just emailed about the Dept. of Ed.'s "Dear Colleague" letter on DEI saying, "Following federal requirements and supporting all members of our university community are not mutually exclusive," and I would like it stated for the record that YES THE FUCK THEY ARE.

Very excited by this: a nice look back on the long view of @hastac.bsky.social & academic networks. Being in a cohort of @hastacscholars.bsky.social was one of my favorite experiences of my PhD education (so far) @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social|@gcsocialwelfare.bsky.social

The press needs to keep doing this (and frankly, it’s about time). An elected official can choose which questions to answer but can’t restrict what questions are asked

Maybe hating on dick bosses is the great unifier, the thing that brings all Americans together.

trillion dollar industry that will revolutionize everything

I was thinking about how folks are cheering for the idea of dismantling the gov’t. in return for a 1 time check for $5000, and…y’all. We’re failing the marshmallow test.

Ah, yes... a strongly worded letter. That will get us out of this fascist hellscape.

It is insanely obvious that Elon Musk is illegally exercising the powers of a principal officer of the United States in violation of the appointments clause

Please help get the word out to our friends who were working in the Federal Government: Some friends & I created this site to track the impacts of the Trump Admin's attack on the federal service, and we're trying to gather as many stories as possible. trumpcostsamerica.com

Eventually Democratic governors and members of congress will figure out that we're liable to nominate for president the first one of them who tells Trump, on camera, to his face, to go fuck himself.

JUST IN: A judge has enjoined President Trump's effort to block federal funds from going toward grant recipients who engage in DEI practices. The judge says the orgs are likely to succeed on claims that this is viewpoint discrimination, among other issues storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Having to do this in a reply to Elon bullshitting about the latest update to his anti-woke chatbot… bleak

JD Vance is proclaiming to the world that the US's AI industry will dominate, Elon Musk and DOGE are hollowing out the government with an AI-first strategy, and Silicon Valley's is stuck on a growth-at-all-costs AI approach. As @katecrawford.bsky.social put it: 'AI is in its empire era'

Hell yes: "If we accept that science is inherently political, then the task becomes to politicize science otherwise...."

Elon Musk says he's going to "fix" X's community notes system because he disagrees with a note on President Trump's claim that Zelensky has a 4% approval rating in Ukraine. Musk also claims community notes are "being gamed by governments & legacy media", but provides no evidence for that claim.

I suppose it's a point of stubborn pride that my PhD advisor asked me, after years of expressing his ambivalence about autoethnography, to give a short lecture on the method to his MSW students for their capstone class. This is a good open-access primer: milnepublishing.geneseo.edu/teaching-aut...

This is high-energy fascist propaganda. They're cutting programs & firing people without evaluating them. This is not about waste. It's about destroying government as a counterbalance to corp. power—getting rid of CFPB, USAID, folks at NIH/CDC, FAA, EPA, nuclear weapons security personnel, etc.

Having spent 15 years with NYC #opendata, I've seen these DOGE guys pop up every other year. They are THE nubes who go on about how amazing how 311 is a failure of an agency at not fixing potholes when 311 is just a call center. Ignorant. Malicious. No class.

Even if your strategy is "let's win the midterms" (living in delusion there will be legit elections), we do that by making Trump and MAGA unpopular. That means denying them any and every "win," from nominees to any legislation. Anything that affirms their actions, affirms them.
