it should be a minimal standard, along the lines of "DON'T PRINT LIES IN THE NEWSPAPER" for opinion pieces to *express the actual opinions of the author* instead of using a dishonest case they think will be more persuasive to get their readership to do the thing they want them to.

This is a somewhat minor if especially funny example, but @404media.co is one of the US' most essential news outlets because they consistently do stuff like this the bigger news sources either don't think of doing or don't bother to do.

I had the same reaction. Mamdani is such a threat in their view that they had to essentially reverse their non-endorsement policy. If Cuomo was cruising to victory, I doubt this piece would be written.

The LLM does not "have values." It reflects the values of the text it has scraped because it is regurgitating the text it has scraped with a bias towards items that are more frequently grouped together. It is unethical or ignorant to write about an LLM using language that implies thought.

They hate science and academia but still want to claim their legitimacy

“individ. sources would fade yet further into the background, as users trust tools like NotebookLM to offer cogent-seeming summaries of enormous troves of texts w/o much attention to their origins or agendas.” NB: You can’t write good history w/o deep, factual context & empathy. AI has neither 🎁 🔗

If you rank Zohran 1st you’re voting to make every New York Times Opinion writer insane for several years.

This guy is in the Virginia Assembly and is attaching an example of a threat made 2 days before the Minnesota shootings. Separately, one of our local county board members received 2 death threats last week.

Last night in Riverside, CA, what 6 months ago would’ve been on every new channel, was only on local news. A man drove his vehicle into protesters. At least one woman screamed that her sister had been ran over. /

"America’s culture of violence is driven by the right...no Democratic presidential candidate would welcome the support of violent extremist groups...Trump has. Repeatedly." Great @mjtoma.bsky.social piece on the real reasons we're sliding downward by many metrics: newrepublic.com/article/1968...

Also, the way that every event, no matter how shocking or horrible or unprecedented, gets fed into the far-right social media hallucination machine, and twisted beyond recognition until it supports the far-right's own nonsensical worldview, is the very core of why we are where we are as a society.

I once posted on Twitter that any white person who reflexively opposed antifa would likely have been opposed to the civil rights demonstrations of the sixties. People got VERY mad, but I was just summarizing the data.

You almost have to appreciate just how beautifully this illustrates the gerontocratic nature of American politics: the Ancient Umbrella is imbued with more experience simply because it existed longer.

I made this in the summer of 2018 and soon after it went viral I showed it to the woman who would later become my wife.

THIS. And, yes, I think that is exactly what his supporters voted for. America's original sin isn't just chattel slavery but the selective lack of object permanence about every abomination that flowed from that infected wound.

Hi everyone I was denied entry, detained, and deported from the USA over the last 48 hours because of my reporting on the Columbia student protests I arrived back in Melbourne hours ago and had my phone handed back to me upon landing

This rundown of the factors leading to political violence "from all stripes" is one of the worst paragraphs I have ever read.

Democratic senators need to stop pretending that GOP senators are their “good friends across the aisle” and realize many of them are just lying sociopaths who are actively fanning the flames of violence against them.

Also, how this is included in history textbooks is really important. The Tea Party is discussed now in most major U.S. history textbooks, and it even appears in the World Civilizations (!) textbook that we use on my campus. It's afforded that much significance.

The donors don't want their workforce deported. But you'll be subject to deportation if you quit your job or join a union or try to bargain for better wages or complain about sexual harassment.

Guy in the white shirt is the guy with the passport. Family says they took him away and they don't know where he is. More video in the thread. Makes your blood boil.

the first known arrest of a citizen by US military in LA and, thankfully for the Historical Record, the dude’s outfit is sick as hell

NEW: Here’s the white nationalist who made the poster that DHS shared of Uncle Sam asking people to "Report All Foreign Invaders" to ICE. The account has recently been retweeting pro-Nazi accounts and posting about why whites should use the n-word www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

this performative ethics would be less of a problem if corporate media adhered to standards of objectivity the rest of the year (instead of parroting every Sam Altman claim with zero skeptical context, turning their websites into amazon prime day affiliates, normalizing fascism, etc.)

It's mind-blowing how little attention this extraordinary statement has received. It's briefly mentioned in a couple news articles, but this MSNBC opinion piece is the only extended discussion of it I've seen: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

favorite dumb comics thing is how some american guy doing too much coke in the 80s would invent a terrible superhero like "sandwich boy" as a joke and then some british guy doing too many sedatives in the 90s would be like "sandwich boy can create a 'reality sandwich' and is thus a living god"

when you want to join the fun but can't quite get down with the nomenclature (ht @davelevitan.bsky.social)

At Amsterdam airport on a LA-bound flight, I got a random check as always. This time, as soon as security opened my backpack, I got hit by the strongest weed smell I'd ever smelled. I've never used any drugs. It wasn't mine. Nervous, I glanced at the person behind me, and Snoop Dogg nodded back.

Morning Briefing: Far right violent extremist groups are using private Telegram channels to share on anti-Trump protests, and these groups have been 'calling for their members to disrupt them.'

there’s got to be some kind of statute of limitations on this crap. I get moral hazard, I get all of that, it’s just completely insane to say that this guy who built an American life for 30 years isn’t American.

Meta AI's WHAT

This is remarkably incoherent even for him. But I especially like the notion that these evil criminals are applying to pick crops and mop hotel bathrooms.

It sounds hyperbolic, I know, but I genuinely believe that wikipedia incorporating LLM-produced article summaries, or sanctioning LLM-produced articles, would signal the end of the internet as we've known it.

who could have predicted that dumping your every intimate thought into badly run cloud automation systems managed by amoral monoliths in a country without functional corporate oversight would go badly

We need *mass* mobilization in the U.S. right now, and I think that people who are somehow still focused on sneering at Perfidious Wine Mom Liberals are profoundly unserious

How many Trump voters actually listened to the things he said bsky.app/profile/phil...

Now watch this video knowing all this: "FBI ‘Escorted’ Him To Trump DHS Presser They Claim He Crashed" www.mediaite.com/media/news/s...

Israel can take out an Iranian commander 1000km away with a drone missile through a single bedroom wall, without any other damage. But to target a Hamas leader a few kilometres away, they need to raze whole neighborhoods to the ground. Is it obvious yet?

I don't know how many times these people have to say "non-whites are not americans unless they are part of my inner circle, we want to do ethnic cleansing" before people start listening bsky.app/profile/pale...

The oppression of the entire Latino community of Los Angeles right now is difficult to convey. Normally vibrant local retail areas of East LA and SELA look like ghost towns this week. People are afraid to leave their homes. Parents afraid to go to work. It's US citizens too. Anyone with brown skin

More Americans voted for Senator Alex Padilla than for 48 of the 53 red state GOP U.S. Senators combined.

Resegregation has always been the plan

assuming we have 2028 elections, only voting for someone who promises to arrest everyone involved in DOGE

Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass right now

Excited to see that black people performing country music are only eligible for 3/5ths of a Grammy

Senator Padilla's assault is horrific, but he's telling us all that what moved him to question Noem was her explicitly stating the Feds were there to take control of the city from its democratically-elected government. The Senator obviously wants us to focus on Noem's nullification of CA government.
