Like the saying goes: "Disability is the Only minority anyone can join at any time, and the only one everyone *will* join if they're lucky enough to live that long"

No one ever calls it "biological height" or asks how many different heights exist, despite both height and sex being complex traits influenced by both biology an environment

I can't believe it's still only February.

It’s probably a good day to explain to your non-scientist socials that graduate students are not merely the next generation of academic science, they are an important component of the current scientific labor force. Feel free to mention that this is cut rate labor as well.

Science is for everyone. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

"You better not be talking to Canada" 👁️👄👁️ I hate that this is pretty much what is happening for US government employees trying to collaborate with colleagues here in Canada. This is both the darkest and dumbest timeline.

“We had to erase trans people or we couldn’t get our federal funding” Fuck the federal funding. You fight, you sue, you do not become complicit in our mass erasure. We are all in this together, and we all go down together. I will not allow us to be jettisoned or erased.

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

📣 TWO WEEKS UNTIL WE STAND UP FOR SCIENCE! 📣 On March 7th, we’re Standing Up for Science in DC & ALL 50 STATES to make our voices heard. We hope you’ll join us! ☀️ #sciencenotsilence #scienceforall #standupforscience2025

In other words, infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

"To cut off a history of a group - even if you are not part of that - is to cut off part of yourself. Because it cuts off your ability to understand humanity, to look at the entirety of humanity. To see the vibrancy and beauty of who we can become." @jessiegender.bsky.social

The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

This administration's attacks on trans people aren't "a distraction" from everything else they're doing. We're not a distraction. What they're doing to trans people is the most bad thing of all - everything else being done is to distract people from the targeting of trans people for extermination.

As Rémi Quirion said in this article, "Science should be without borders". This is especially true for shared ecosystems like the Great Lakes. To have so many important projects shut down, and for researchers to no longer be able to share important environmental knowledge is so alarming.

Horrifying news out of upstate New York. Sam Nordquist, a transgender man from Minnesota was found dead after being tortured for over a month and then finally murdered by a group of 5 people, including a teenager. www.whec.com/top-news/nys...

Washington Post got their hands on internal documents from DOGE showing the entire plan to implement resegregation. They're going to purge minorities from government by calling them DEI. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/int...

CW: transphobic violence His name was Sam Nordquist. "Five people were charged by New York State police with the murder of a missing transgender man, whom authorities say was tortured for more than a month." www.bbc.com/news/article...

Canada's wetlands are disappearing, and the time to act is now. Wetlands are crucial for fighting climate change and protecting wildlife. The Green Party is committed to protecting and restoring our wetlands for a healthier, more sustainable future. #ProtectWetlands

The @globservingsystem.bsky.social is asking ice fishing anglers to gather and submit measurements of ice thickness, as well as observations of snow cover and other conditions. Story by @gristnews.bsky.social: www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/ice-...

1st time #macrophytemonday contributor for our new JAPM paper on APM communication. In short, the language on agency websites doesn't match w/how people are searching for APM info, making it tough to find. Read more - www.seagrant.wisc.edu/news/when-it... #lakeplantmonday

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

Major news: Donald Trump has just issued a trans military ban, with much of the details left to Hegseth. It states that being trans is incompatible with "an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle" I know many military trans people who have served admirably for decades. Shameful.

Everyone should be aware of the line that has been crossed in the Trump trans military EO. No longer is this about "evidence," "science" or "protecting kids." Now, explicitly, black and white, it's about trans people being "liars," "dishonorable," "false." It's a big step towards very bad things.

This is what happens to trans women placed in men's prisons. They are subjected to daily horrific rapes and used as human chattel to pacify aggressive and violent inmates. It's called v coding.

I'm looking forward to attending the @canadiangreens.bsky.social Shadow Cabinet retreat this weekend!

Opinion: Alberta’s new legislation for transgender youth harms more than it helps thevarsity.ca/2025/0... #transgender #trans #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA

Sooooo if this whole "biological sex" EO is really happening, biologists are going to make as much noise about it as possible, right? Professional societies, universities, individual research groups? It's really incumbent on us (that's a "biologists us" here) to make a BIG FUCKING STINK

In light of what is happening in the US, our political parties need to do much more to support 2SLGBTQIA+ Canadians. We need our leaders to take a stand and make it clear and explicit in their policies and platform that they will support us and protect our rights.

1. NEW: Legal filings reveal how trans inmates have endured widescale persecution, humiliation, suffering, trauma, and brushes with death for many years in Florida prisons, well beyond what has been previously widely known. www.madycast.com/p/i-cannot-i... #trans #lgbt

"Being treated like an enemy and a traitor because we had the temerity to survive is seemingly one of the core transmasculine experiences."

Something to keep in mind for 2025 Written by James Miller of A Small Fiction

The government is prioritizing pipelines over people, bribing the residents of Burnaby to compromise their safety and well-being for pipeline expansion. We demand an end to this corruption! We must divest from fossil fuels and put the future of our people and our planet first!

True common sense means protecting the planet we all depend on and supporting the people who suffer most when we fail to act. The Conservatives' priorities couldn’t be clearer, and Canada deserves better. #AccountabilityMatters

I have completed my report based on the workshop I facilitated last month at #UMISC2024, "Applying Principles of #DEIJA to #InvasiveSpecies Research, Management, and Engagement". I hope some of you will find it of interest. Please feel free to share. inclusivescience.ca/applying-pri...

Word-perfect answers from Butler to some embarrassing questions from the interviewer... (imagine asking them if 'woke is broke', you'd just never live that down)

From 1.5C to 2C of global warming is an increase by 33.3 percent. Many people assume that the negative impacts of this would also increase by only 33.3 percent. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The increase is non-linear. This is one of the biggest missing pieces in public climate literacy.

1. I have released my first post-election anti-trans risk assessment map. The national risk is high due to potential Republican national policies targeting trans people. DC has slightly increased in risk. Wyoming and Georgia go up as well. Subscribe to support my journalism. Lets dig in.

‼️Are you a Canadian who cares about EDI in research? Did you know about what’s currently going on at the Standing Committee on Science and Research in Ottawa where the "Impact of the Criteria for Awarding Federal Funding on Research Excellence in Canada" is being studied? 🧪 I didn’t till just now 1/

Yesterday I passed my PhD Defense! I have to make some editorial corrections before my final submission, and am otherwise #PhDone!

One day to go! I am so nervous but also so excited to get to share what I have been working on all these years!
