What summer does to my brain: I just spent ten minutes wishing I had a cup of tea, only to realise that one had been sitting in front of me the whole time.

Every now and again I hear people talking about how awesome this place is, so I pop back, block the bots who have followed me in the meanwhile, hunt yet again for the post button, say something inane like this, then leave again. Hugs to everyone!! (Except the bots.)

So excited about everything @indiaholton.bsky.social writes! #BookSky

69 days until The Geographer's Map to Romance - my Anne of Green Gables meets Twister fantasy romcom - comes out. Just saying. :)

THE meme of 2025 for me.

Being an anxious introvert is a professional plus for me, since writing is basically overthinking, just with chapters and a three act structure.

Jonathan Bailey ★★★★★ Jonathan Bailey with nerdy scientist glasses ★★★★★★★★★★

Romance books can be "literary" af. They can be beautifully written. They can be insightful & explore complex issues. They can make important observations. They can change minds. They can save lives. If you only see them as smut, you've never read one. Either that or your misogyny is hanging out.

One of the best things about loving the Anne of Green Gables books is that, when you mention this to other people, almost always they answer with how much they love them too, and there follows a moment of shared delight that I know Anne herself would adore.

My favourite was having dinner with a bunch of Oxford ornithologists. "Braveheart was RUINED for me about halfway through. Everyone knows black-headed gulls didn't nest inland in Scotland until the 1950s"

I was supposed to tell you this tomorrow, but I couldn't wait. I'm adding an Ornithologists short story to my preorder incentive pack for The Geographer's Map to Romance.

If you enjoyed The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love, stay tuned for a small but hopefully special announcement tomorrow. 💙🐦

Sometimes when I'm trying to come up with a new story to write, I find a picture on pinterest of someone reading who has my favourite personal aesthetic (since I am my own ideal reader), and I imagine what the book they're holding is about.

I handed in The Antiquarian's Object of Desire today. This one's my homage to Howl's Moving Castle (yes, again!) and dark academia, and I had THE BEST time writing it. Also today, I finished writing a special little something I hope to tell you about soon! :) :) :)

Fred Rogers does seem to have been a genuinely decent human being and also he would probably be the first to tell you not to idolize him, but to find in yourself what is beautiful and special and hold that up to the light so that you can see it clearly, and can everyone else.

I love this and I know I am not adding anything to Tobias' very wise thread, but this is why I usually say "conflict, tension, mystery, and/or uncertainty" when I do writing talks or classes. If a story is moving, it can move because of any of those things.

The most Australian thing I've ever read is that the country used to be home to a giant bird known as "the demon duck of doom."

ME: hurrah, I've finished my work for now, and can take a short holiday! TWO HOURS LATER: I may just be going mad THREE HOURS LATER: oops, writing a new thing

I am here, and ought to put more effort into it, but so far its been very quiet for me, whereas Threads is interesting, busy, and diverse. I'll keep checking in though when I remember.

Sending love and best wishes to everyone in Los Angeles right now. xx

Why do my cats pose for photographs like they’re 18th-century aristocracy?

Have I ever recovered from Wren Ohmsford and Triss not becoming lovers in The Talismans of Shannara? No, absolutely not, and I never will.

So hey, let’s start off 2025 maybe making somebody’s life better in a small tangible way. What is a small practical thing—object, lifehack, whatever—that solved a small annoyance for you? For me, did you know you can buy clips with elastic specifically to hold the corner of your fitted sheet on?

I have neither the space nor the time for your continuum.

What is the most fun feeling in the world and why is it falling in love with a new set of characters in your writing?

Random fact based on my current re-re-re-read of The Night Circus (probably add a couple more re's in there): the name of Cecilia in The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels took root in my love for that book.

Just typed "The End" on my 2026 dark academia romcom. Considering it's the afternoon of December 31st here, the timing feels magical. Which, considering the book itself is filled with magic, is just right. :)

Despite having many books on my TBR pile, tonight I decided to reread one of my 5⭐️ books of the year! I've loved all @indiaholton.bsky.social's novels, but The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love is my favorite 💕

Still the best two sentences on climate action.
