Parsed through the eyes of a filmmaker, Commedia Mortale summons dreams of kinship and nightmares of enmity. Ranging across philosophy, food, history, love, loss and landscape, Holloway conjures up a unique portrait of a place, the fables of its past and the dilemma of how to live now.

the tall tales of ageing Second World War Partisans, the dreams of a chef to travel to parts unknown supported by a Greek chorus of drunks, a talking parrot, and asylum-seeking footballers with their own dreams, and miraculously a visit to the village by Anthony Bourdain himself.

New owners move in and over time become entangled with a parade of oddball characters. From pagan ritual to the antics of modern village life, the clash between outsiders and locals, Commedia Mortale seeks to understand what is authentic in both:

ABOUT THE BOOK
Liguria, Italy. In a mountain village sits an old farmhouse that stores the memories of those who have lived there and suffers the tales of the visitors who come and go. The house weaves its magic on all who encounter it.

Just got @influxpress.bsky.social's release of Joel Lane's "The Terrible Changes", which has been unavailable for a while. Not done with it yet (am savoring) but it's definitely the best horror/weird I've read this year so far.

Have just finished Lie of the Land, another knock-out Black Country noir novel from @kerryhp.bsky.social and @saltpublishing.com and have just started Bindlestiff from Wayne Holloway and @influxpress.bsky.social which is already, a few pages in, proving to be a slick, acerbic Hollywood satire.

And at 2pm, Gary is speaking on the Publishing Panel with Jack Thompson from @cipherpress.bsky.social and Jess Chandler from @prototypepubs.bsky.social about what we look for when publishing a novel – this should be a really great conversation.

I found this fantastic book on the @influxpress.bsky.social website a while back and got around to reading it these last few days. It is a journey through the idea of the city as found in art and literature, from their foundation to their demise and everything in between.

'Terminal Zones' by Gareth Rees. Darling comic eco-collapse will always be my jam. I especially love the one about the new father who falls in love with a pylon. @garetherees.bsky.social @influxpress.bsky.social
