FYI, I still give a fuck. Bachelor's in econ, but my opinions are my own. Couple of belts in Krav Maga, still a better lover than fighter. Leave no trace when you camp, and Griffen will be happy.

C'mon, those patches are someone's job. If they were better at it, they'd be out of work... Ditto if they were worse at it, probably

It makes no logical sense, but it’s key to understanding politics to internalize most Americans would rather pay $12 to a private company than have their taxes raised $8

I am just a guy with an undergraduate international relations degree, but I can easily explain why a “multipolar world” where nobody gets to make money off the US and everyone has to pay their own defense costs doesn’t end up with the United States in the driver’s seat.

Hear you there. & maybe it's just that 'hatred of the other ' itself just sits oddly for me. People from other cultures, and other cultures are just overwhelmingly neat to me. Love learning about em' all.

And the sick part is how much the US is *helping* by immediately making the effort look better and better fiscally. I wish there was a good way to rely on American society less, for everyone, right now. At this point I'm cheering for all of the Canadian people, not just my friends up there. 🤞

5) The dominance of short-termism and the cult of shareholder value. The gutting of the state and of higher education will be devastating for capital in the medium to long-run. But many of those impacts are not felt immediately and shareholders care about their returns next quarter.

4) Collective mobilization is hard, even with strong motivations to do so. If individual firms believe they can extract more valuable favors/concessions from the regime unilaterally, they may not see collective lobbying/pressure as worth it and even as contrary to their individual interests (see #3)

3) We're wrong about business interests. In a plutocratic personalist regime, big businesses may be confident in their ability to secure tax cuts, favorable regulation/enforcement, and favors while simply regarding all the uncertainty and chaos as a small price to pay for access to the king.

2) Ideology: holders of capital genuinely believe that the vast majority of gov't spending is wasteful, regulation uniformly burdensome, and higher ed a cesspool of worthless indoctrination. They're fine with Trump taking an axe to it because they believe the end result will be more efficient.

1) Motivated reasoning: firms and finance simply do not believe that Trump is serious about tariffs, despite [gestures at giant pile of contrary evidence]. This is consistent with much of the business reporting. Tariffs will be short-lived, he'll reverse course, key industries will secure carve-outs
