Yep, that same Iochromaland. Talking about how great Solanaceae are and wishing to never again hear any lineage called basal.

I truly think people don’t realize how many universities and colleges — especially public ones — may shut down if restrictions on and withholding of federal funding persists for even one presidency We are facing the demolition of American higher education

As many of you know, ~170 Program Officers at #NSF were fired on Tuesday, including a number that worked in Divisions important to the EEB community (e.g., DEB and GEO/OPP). 1/3

Must watch speech by neuroscientist Kailyn Price at a HHS rally protesting funding cuts to science. "Cutting indirect costs is like telling a football team to work with only the players. No lights for the field, no physical therapists for the players, no water for the showers."

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

Where can we donate to the legal fund for NSF employees fired without cause today?

This is absolutely devastating www.wired.com/story/nation...

Last day to apply for SSE funds to attend this event and receive valuable science policy training from AIBS! forms.gle/ghaAzVTPCCKC...

We are supposed to be able to use tribal IDs for (not all) legal things (sick so can't think of word). This letter highlights: 1. Vigilantes are intimidating people on behalf of ICE and 2. ICE can't tell the difference between North and South Indigenous people. It's almost like we both belong here

Two incredible #BSAawards opportunities are closing soon! 📅 Apply by Monday, February 17, 2025, for the AJB Synthesis Papers, including the $2,000 AJB Synthesis Prize, and the $1,500 Graduate Student Research Awards. Visit: botany.org/home/awards.... #AJBSynthesisPrize #BSAGSRA #IamaBotanist

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

Someone awesome in my circle shared some terrific news with me today but was hesitant to do so because of all that is going on in the science world. It may appear insensitive that you are celebrating when other colleagues are struggling but I entreat you to celebrate & share good news. 1/

Every time I listen to @ruha9.bsky.social, I get a little smarter. youtu.be/1VRCfuKEGdo?...

Here, a celebration of Apocynaceae (dogbanes, milkweeds, swallow-worts etc.) fruits and flowers tucked into a phylogenetic study. Remarkable diversity. www.frontiersin.org/journals/eco...

You are not powerless, and he is not unstoppable. Look at, and learn from, the funding freeze and how quickly he was forced to surrender.

NIH had two tracks for the same fellowship: those from underrepresented backgrounds and those not. Both usually get funds. Rather than merge back to one track to comply with their understanding of executive orders, they essentially rejected without review all the ones on the underrepresented track.

Letter from the SSE/SSB/ASN councils on the scientific understanding of sex and gender, pls RT

🌱 The BSA Emerging Leader Award honors early-career botanical scientists making a significant impact in the field. Know someone deserving? Submit your nomination today! Deadline: March 15, 2025 Learn more here: botany.org/home/awards/... #BSAEmergingLeader #BSAAwards #IamaBotanist

The program that changed my life ❤️

Hey so when are scientists going to be in the streets? They want to cut a quarter to a HALF of NSF staff!!

Proud of this statement from the tenure track/tenured caucus with UCW Colorado rebutting a right-wing smear campaign targeting faculty hiring programs. www.ucwcolorado.org/cu-boulder

Hey look! A Society for the Study of Evolution starter pack! Includes ESEB, ASN, and journals! Pls Re-skeet!

To expand on this, right now ~200 postdoc fellows directly funded by NSF are locked out of their salary &research funds right before the first of the month. No doubt other NSF funded grads &postdocs are affected as well. All requests for funds put in before the freeze are slowly being cancelled

1st paper from my lab this year. Chelsea & Erica showed that self-incompatible plants of this little groundcherry change to self-compatible as they get old, but they are only passable selfers, making less than half the number of seeds as plants are fixed for self-compatibility rdcu.be/d7ZM8

The Oath of Office taken by me and my colleagues at the NSF - “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; …”

Try our new in silico PCR (sPCR) tool sharkmer- github.com/caseywdunn/s.... You give it primers and fastq reads, it gives you sequences that would be amplified by PCR. Works in minutes on a laptop for high copy regions like rRNA, great for species id etc. Feedback welcome. #bioinformatics #ngs

Now do NIH, NSF, and the other science funding agencies.

Someone decided the bathroom next to my office should feel more homey, and I'll tell you what, I am on board.

Really thankful to all of the scientists who made themselves available to talk to me about the unprecedented situation at NIH. I've never had so many people reach out to me for a story like this. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

A reminder to all plant (and plant-adjacent) ECRs, the New Phytologist Next Generation Scientist symposium will be at Birmingham this summer. We'd love to see you there! 🙂 Application deadline is Monday: www.newphytologist.org/nextgenevent... #Plantscience #newphytologist

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Every time I review a paper where I can't figure out what the message is, I come back to this. Clearer topic sentences would drastically improve most papers. So take a hot minute before your next submission to read this. @stephenbheard.bsky.social scientistseessquirrel.wordpress.com/2020/01/08/t...

Time to end the vascular plant chauvinism - "Bryophytes...flourish in environments where even the hardiest vascular plant species cannot survive"...the diversity of bryophytes surpasses that of ferns, lycophytes and grasses #botany www.nature.com/articles/s41... #botany 🧪🌾

I am super excited and proud to share the paper of my two undergraduate students, where we look at how a liverwort adapted to drylands uses its scales for as sunscreen!! bioone.org/journals/mad...

Today my colleague shared with me the most EXQUISITE image of a seed the size of a dust particle, collected from a rare plant called Xylanche in Nepal, and photographed using scanning electron microscopy. Wow.

Travel awards (up to $5,000) are available to support the study of collections in the United States National Herbarium. Applications are due on 15 January: naturalhistory.si.edu/research/bot...

New! @jenncoughlan.bsky.social kindly shared their MIRA NIH award with our github repo. If you have a successful grant app you're willing to share, please contribute! github.com/RILAB/statem...

What do we have here? This is a scar from historical resin extraction in a longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) tree. It helps to explain an important era of American history...and also the decline of one of my top two favorite tree species. A thread.

Hey All, plz repost, and share with grads, post-docs and disease folks! We are hiring a post-doc to work on mechanisms of immune responses of frog hosts to Bd infections. Deadline is February 1, 2025. Details for the position can be found at the link below. 🐸🐸🐸 zamudiolab.org/2024/12/17/p...

There's a super fun story about these spurless Columbines! Pollinators mainly visit flowers for nectar, but these nectarless populations were very stable, and this study found both molecular & biological basis for these supposedly disadvantageous forms. 🧪 Link: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
