I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Politicians bang on about the ‘special relationship’ but the British public hasn’t believed in it for some time.

truly, the transphobic autist is among the most cursed of god’s creatures

If you've not read it, now is a good time to check out my explainer on Luigi Mangione's "grey tribe" ideology. Just remember that his public online activity stops ~6mo before the shooting, so we don't know how his beliefs may have changed in that time. www.the-independent.com/news/world/a...

I think it’s genuinely interesting to consider how US politicians of the late 1700s and early 1800s would be reacting to all this. You just KNOW they’d be unashamedly making incredibly aggressive, heated, and sometimes racist comparisons to Xi, Erdogan, Putin and King George III

girls will say “i know a place” and then you take here

I am continually alarmed and fascinated by the depth of magical thinking that Donald Trump seems to inspire. To a degree unique among modern politicians, people routinely delude themselves about who he is and what he'll do — even though he's also uniquely candid about it! What explains this?

it's sort of incredible to me that more people haven't done what sassoon is doing here: refusing to do an illegal thing, and making a stink about it. feels like it would be popular!!

It’s increasingly clear the Trump admin wants to comprehensively defund civil society in order to weaken progressive politics. Elon Musk more or less makes this explicit with his numerous posts sweepingly defining government payments to NGO as “fraud”.

I don’t know if any of you knew of Eden, she was one of us: a shitposter, a struggler, a doll in the every best sense of the word. What happened to her is unconscionable - she deserves to be remembered by us 💖

Huge news. This, allegedly, is the man who pulled Eden Knight back into the tentacles of her family & tricked her into returning to Saudi Arabia — potentially by lying to her about US asylum law. Eden’s friends always suspected that it was Bader Alomair, but neither they nor I was able to prove it.

Found when sorting an old drive. I still, very occasionally, say 'not many badgers in the House of Lords' and this is why:

NEW: An internal email obtained by WIRED from a threat intelligence team monitoring US Treasury systems advised labeling DOGE operatives an "insider threat," adding that it recommended suspending their access "immediately." | www.wired.com/story/treasu...

as we all know, trans kids are never missing or exploited

my newspaper's US arm has now officially switched from British to American English and ngl pals I am STRUGGLING periods in "U.N." but not "NATO"? "said tuesday" instead of "said on tuesday"?! punctuation ALWAYS inside quote marks?!? it's just so much to process for a poor rustic limey

I never stopped XD

This shouldn’t need saying, but it’s extremely important that journalists not downplay presidential lawbreaking. Laws are not “niceties”. They are laws. And the USA is meant to be a nation of laws. If you need to say “alleged” or “appeared to”, fine. But don’t hide the gravity of the act itself.

BREAKING WAPO: Interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin just announced the dismissal of roughly 30 federal prosecutors who worked on Capitol riot cases in the D.C. office over the past four years. Notifications went out at about 5 p.m. on Friday. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

My basic read of this survey data is that teens trust social media influencers more than journalists and are essentially fine with YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and podcasts killing the news industry. In fact they think we'll be better off.
