Something is shifting. They are still breaking things and stealing things. And they will keep trying to break and to steal. But the propaganda magic around the oligarchical coup is fading. (1/2)

I've been thinking this for some time too, @sifill.bsky.social. sherrilyn.substack.com/p/democracy-...

Watched The Blues Brothers film today. Pretty mediocre and the Nazi characters sub-subplot was superfluous and kinda stupid. But it did make me a little nostalgic to see the Nazi characters as ridiculous, fringe characters nowhere near any sort of institutional power.

What's happening in America is that, in the most literal sense, internet trolls have taken over the government.

Now the whole country gets the experience of what it's like when private equity buys the place you work

The media isn’t calling it a coup for the same reason they won’t call a Nazi a Nazi 1. They’re complicit 2. It doesn’t match the *aesthetic* of what they think a coup looks like

This song has been in my head since Monday night. Someone really needs to do a cover version.

Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last. Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.

by freezing all federal grants, trump is fundamentally transforming the relationship between the executive and congress. he is asserting dictatorial authority over federal spending, transforming congress's lawmaking powers into advisory authority. it is a constitutional crisis

This is absolutely chilling. He truly is a sociopath.

Listening to #k.d.Lang's amazing 1988 album Shadowland and growing increasingly upset about the fact that I can't find it on any list of top 50/100/200 albums of the 1980's.

AccuWeather: between LA fires, hurricanes & other weather disasters, the US has suffered $693 to $799 billion in total economic damages over the past 12 mos, equaling nearly 3% of GDP. But remember, it’s the energy transition that’s expensive

You know who understands risk? Actuaries. And guess what they're saying: "... the plausible worst-case hit to global economies would be 50% in the two decades before 2090." I'm bad at budgeting, can someone tell me whether 50% is a lot?

"They would have found him guilty"

These teenagers and young men — 95% of whom are Black, Latinx, or Filipino — earn between $2.20 and $4 per hour, plus an additional $1 an hour when they’re actively fighting fires, according to the DJJ. ⤵️

I generally don't like to pick on entire generations, but man, the #SilentGeneration had some really questionable music taste. (The stats are from James Coleman's 1961 book The Adolescent Society, and I think the surveys were completed in 1958.)

Our beloved security consultant Clarence Beeks disappeared 42 years ago today, last seen on an Amtrak Metroliner from DC to Philadelphia on the evening of December 31. Hold space for him in your heart today.
