Yes, you have to understand that a thing woven into the fabric of my psyche in an almost foundational way sounds like this. I am shaken, in these moments. You've done nothing wrong, I just need a moment to collect myself.

The sweet spot is to make it not feel random, but make it feel like you can't see the game behind the game. Which of course requires creating a game behind the game, with just enough randomization to feel inscrutable but consistent and partially learn-able.

To the player, this feels like: You're planning to steal a royal carriage full of dvd players. A priest of the god of blood shows up and is like: hey here's a magic sword, no reason 🙂‍↕️ You succeed. Two weeks later the sun turns red, and the clerics of the blood god can cast Solar Beam now???

It feels like archaeology, gently digging it out until you find the shape of the thing without breaking it

Not surprised tbh. Dinoberry consistently kills it on the naming front.

If you're doing it right every time you play one RPG you're playing all of them and a handful of TV shows and cheap paperbacks to boot

NSR: according to this table I start with d8 ninja stars and a copy of Playdwarf.

Like the rest of Cairn, the world building is really functional without being overly minimalist. Which is great because I can bring my own esoteric baroque maximalism (BYOEBM) to the proceedings. That said, with the sheer volume of procedures (dungeons! Forests! Etc!) I'm not worried.

Overall I really like the pacing of the exercise. It's the right amount of detail to get the game to the table, giving you a strong general idea of a thing and then moving on so you don't get bogged down in minutia.

I took the first roll result surprisingly often, the random choices gave some fun and unexpected details. Menhir rings showed up twice as a fun motif, a word I had to look up. Ending up with the headwaters in a dome of complete darkness was a nice surprise.

I like asymmetry between GM and PC I love asymmetry between everyone! That's why the subway runners skill list is randomized for each character. You never know what your friends can do!

I want to make a joke but it would spoil my secret upcoming VOID affiliate broadcast so be sure to tune in, Internet Friends!

I can work on it for exactly as long as it's fun and then I have to stop.

I need to read GORE, it makes me laugh because I found out about it halfway through writing a game called GORM and I look forward to the other 24 games in the GOR jam

Yeah I'm honestly running the numbers on the upfront costs for laser-printed b&w staple bound games.

Cheap paper and ink smudges need to be aligned with the theme of the game
