Anyone surprised by this? Probably the first of many. #AcademicSky #EduSky

CDC cutting legendary epi training program and firing "disease detectives" by @helenbranswell.bsky.social www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

Stunning. And terrible for US and global public health

I took a shot at figuring out how much money each state stands to lose in a single year if the NIH fixes the indirect cost rate at 15%. 🧵

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

A horrific story: A 22-year-old died from an asthma attack after his inhaler jumped from $66 to $539—out of reach when his insurance, a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary, stopped covering it. He struggled to breathe for five days before collapsing. The cruelty of our healthcare system knows no bounds.

🔥🔥A 2021 study found that Medicaid expansion as part of the ACA led to a substantial reduction in mortality, primarily driven by reductions in disease-related deaths. A 2018 study in the Journal of Political Economy found that, Medicaid reduced infant and child mortality since the 1960s and 1970s.🔥🔥

This is the most important chart published in America this week. (By @dylanlscott.bsky.social)

This is chilling and just wrong. Maternal mortality reviews are essential to improve care for all pregnant women and provide answers to family members

Dr Oz, Trump's new CMS boss, during height of covid: "Schools are a very appetizing opportunity. I just saw a nice piece in The Lancet arguing the opening of schools may only cost us 3% in terms of total mortality. Any life lost is a life lost, but that might be a tradeoff some folks would consider"
