We live in a very small niche here, but one that absolutely depends on institutional knowledge. This is not good for many pilots who don't even know this expertise exists until very bad days.

This is not good

This week’s main story is about the budget and staffing cuts being made to public health agencies in the U.S. under RFK Jr.’s leadership, how those cuts will impact all of us, and some foolproof ideas for what scientists can do in the absence of totally superfluous stuff like, y’know, centrifuges.

Please watch this episode of @lastweektonight.com with John Oliver, especially if you have ever thought "Well, RFK is a bit out there, but he also said some interesting stuff..." I dare you to think the same at the end of the episode With an interview to @iwashyna.bsky.social! #MedSky

This is a great episode of @lastweektonight.com if for no other reason that it features @iwashyna.bsky.social youtube.com/watch?v=8H34...

We just watched this tonight. I’ve been thoroughly depressed about these cuts already, but John Oliver really brings it home about the damage RFK Jr is doing to this country. Hubs sums it up, “Our country is going to die because of this man”

Here is the link to the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver about RFK, Jr, public health, and HHS (including NIH) www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H34...

YOUR FOES WOULD SEE YOU SLEEPLESS: RESIST AND REST.

An example of why American news doesn’t get Canada. @nytimes.com 🎁 article states PM Carney has won a full term. He has not. If it’s a minority Liberal government, it could fall at any time. Americans: get Canadian news about Canada - it’s accurate. #Canada www.nytimes.com/live/2025/04...

Our students need us to do the work so they can do their work

My thoughts from watching right wing media work over the last decade… changing language around diversity, equity, and inclusion is a trap. You end up confirming their allegations that your commitments to DEI were wrong, and you’ll later be accused of covering up programs that you know to be wrong.

(Post-menopause, too.)

Nothing to be scared of here in political terms. One of the least popular presidents is now even less popular than he was in his first term. People need to come out from under rocks.

Here’s last night’s story about the impact RFK Jr. is having on public health, and why the rate of diabetes in China is *not* fifty percent. Can you hear us, Robert? Robert, listen to us: you have to stop acting like half of China has diabetes. It’s wrong, and also very weird! youtu.be/8H34jcpEsFs

🧪 First the 60 Minutes story, & now John Oliver did an excellent story about the harm being done to our biomedical research institutions. Please watch and share this. As an added bonus look for our own @iwashyna.bsky.social who makes an appearance! 🩺 🛟 #SaveHHS #ProtectNIH #ResearchMatters

Our top job is to make sure every single person we can possibly reach knows in detail what they’re doing to science, medical research, public health, & education We should also offer things to do about it! But many people will also find their own things when they know the details. Let’s share ‘em

So a clip with me on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talking about indirect costs

You have to wonder what Mark Carney's other two wishes were after rubbing that bottle

I am an indirect cost and I endorse this message.

🍂 🧪 Why capping indirect costs at 15% impedes scientific research

Thank you for speaking out!

Outstanding job explaining the simple reality that indirect costs are real and important!

A truly remarkable resignation letter from a physician who was the chief medical officer in an institute within NIH, published in a medical journal. Containing also some proposals for what science culture and organization should do now. www.atsjournals.org/doi/10.1513/...

This is definitely worth a read... This is what conscience and courage look like... www.atsjournals.org/doi/10.1513/... 1/n

The latest episode of @lastweektonight.com was essentially a recap of a considerable portion of my Bluesky feed from the past few months, including prominently featuring @iwashyna.bsky.social.

“You know you coulda just asked” “No, I actually didn’t know that” “Now you do”

🏳️‍⚧️ rights are non-negotiable

“How are you doing?” “Fine” “You know, you say it that fast…”

everyone on their side of things understands how much of a problem collective bargaining is for them.

After a while, Vishwakarma blew out a long breath. "The Russians, you said?" Smiley nodded. “But, actually, the damn Russians?" “I'm afraid so.” "Well, that's no good for anyone, is it?" ~ @harkaway.bsky.social in Karla’s Choice
