After seeing scant coverage of Saturday's protests in the @nytimes.com and @washingtonpost.com Sunday editions, I was compelled to do some research and write a thing. I'm asking for your help in *sharing this as broadly as possible*, to help start a conversation. j15r.com/projects/pro...

You Can Stop Asking Where the Mass Opposition Is. It’s Everywhere.

And finally, a few of my favorite signs from #handsoff Atlanta.

Encouraging that this church across from the GA State Capitol has its bells tolling throughout as 20,000 people matched by for #handsoff Atlanta.

Great speakers and everyone's favorite ESL interpreter at #handsoff Atlanta. Especially heartening to see people from the CDC speaking up for the important work they do.

Over 20,000 people representing in the ATL! #handsoff

Joining the #HandsOff2025 march in Atlanta today with the whole family. There's nothing more important any of us can be doing today. If you possibly can, please join the nearest one. Let's make this a massive show of resistance! handsoff2025.com

Take a step back and think about this: We have California and Illinois seeking to negotiate directly with foreign trading partners, seemingly in an effort to work around tariffs decreed from DC. Are these the cracks that start a breakdown of the whole shebang? www.nytimes.com/2025/04/04/u...

Long thread, worth every moment of your time. @skiles.bsky.social has the experience to back up this analysis, and we have very good reason to be concerned that some or all of this will come to pass. If it does, it will be unlike anything we've ever seen. In a Very Bad Way.

This is a small bit of good news about the 23andme debacle. Though it's shocking to me that the FTC even has to say "they have to adhere to the terms of their contracts with users". The alternative being that they *don't* have to if there's money to be made?! therecord.media/ftc-23andme-...

TIL about @bodegacats.bsky.social, and it is exactly the palate cleanser I needed between courses of chaos and societal collapse.

Wisconsin folks: please, I am begging y’all to go vote today. Don’t assume this race is won. Every vote is gonna matter. We need EVERYONE to go cast a ballot for Susan Crawford. Polls close at 8pm. Go here to find out where you’re supposed to vote: myvote.wi.gov/en-us/Find-M...

Take a look at these graphs. It's a really clarifying way to look at climate: (energy in) - (energy out) is hard to argue with. We must get this to zero just to stop the warming from continuing. Getting greenhouse emissions to net zero is only the *starting point*.

This is really worth a moment of your time to read. A hell of a lot more convenient and less painful than listening to the actual hearings.

In case you missed this: 23andme has filed for bankruptcy, leaving its genetic database up for grabs. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be many constraints on what they can do with it. If you have any data with them, I strongly suggest you delete it: www.technologyreview.com/2025/03/25/1...

Good piece on the collective action problem as it relates to universities. Though I'd point out that, of all people, universities should be aware of this problem and its potential solutions...

If they can do it in Amsterdam bsky.app/profile/stri... Ankara bsky.app/profile/stri... Berlin bsky.app/profile/gmf1... Belgrade + Budapest bsky.app/profile/rehm... Bucharest bsky.app/profile/maks... France bsky.app/profile/fife... Slovakia bsky.app/profile/toma... We can do it here!

This Venn diagram does a beautiful job of capturing the inherent tradeoffs among density, services, and taxes. The only ways off this plane I can see are: - Individualism: No taxes, no services. - Feudalism: High taxes, no services but defense. None but the delusional and reactionary wants either.
