New Cambridge Element 'Conspiracy Theories and their Believers: A Comparative Outlook' by Daniel Stockemer & @nickbordeleau.com is now free to read for 2 weeks - cup.org/4hSFMUy #cambridgeelements #politics

Much of the anglophone media has chosen to focus on the AfD, and the electoral performance of the far right. Whilst certainly important, I think this has led to many missing a story: the intertwined recovery of Die Linke and the BSW's narrow miss.

Initial thoughts, caveat: just from the exit polls: - If the CDU doesn't make it to 30% is going to be a disappointment, even despite the biggest party status. - The SPD's position is very poor with a result narrowly above the Greens. - The Green result is uninspiring, but fits their aims.

Some fantastic articles here to prepare you for the election this weekend.

Too far for Bardella, yet Simion and László continue to engage, the former even going so far as to write an open letter calling for help and appearances from Musk.

Even briefly scanning German-language tiktok, the amount of content promoting the AfD and Die Linke is incredibly noticeable very quickly.

Good discussion of CG and the various 'faces' that he shows to appeal to voters.

Habeck's alleged plagiarism scandal reminded me of the best PhD advice I ever received - if you want people to read your thesis, become a politician in CEE.

You spend hours looking at false and bizarre scientific claims, you think nothing you've found is stranger than what you've already discussed. Then Georgescu does the maths on cows vs beef, and concludes the answer is plastic meat.

😷 During the Covid-19 pandemic, many put faith in the political system to keep them safe. Others were less trustful. 🗣️ @louisehalberg.bsky.social argues that such trust, or the lack of it, was a key explanation for pandemic-era political disagreement. ➡️ bit.ly/3ChHhMs

Teaching on populism, or just thinking about it? Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser and I have published a symposium in @pspolisci.bsky.social on 'Populism and Democracy' which is now available (open access).

For me, this is part of what most Western coverage and discussion of Romania's elections got wrong - even if an outside power is engaging in disinformation, it still needs a receptive audience for it to translate into electoral results.

Because the best time to weaken public health campaigns is right as a zoonotic virus hits your population.

I offered some thoughts for @cepa.bsky.social regarding the now annulled election, the role of health discourse, and how similar themes can be seen elsewhere in CEE

There is so much more to this election than just Russian interference. Romanians and Romania aren't just actors in a game of superpowers. There are so many domestic factors and histories being ignored for the sake of grand narratives or foreign policy positions.

Following on from last week's analysis on the Romanian elections, SSEES PhD student jackddean.bsky.social  asks 'Who is Calin Georgescu?' for the SSEES Research Blog: blogs.ucl.ac.uk/ssees/2024/1...

In Goodbye Eastern Europe (Oneworld Publications, 2023) Jacob Mikanowski gives readers an intimate and meticulously researched portrayal of Eastern Europe. Jack Dean writes that the book masterfully fulfils its goal of providing a history of the region. ceureviewofbooks.com/review/an-in...

In Behind the Wall (@politybooks.bsky.social, 2024), Ines Greipel explores her own family’s past to illuminate a culture of silence in the GDR and investigates why parts of the former GDR are supportive of extremist groups today. Jack Dean reviews the book. ceureviewofbooks.com/review/fear-...
