The question now is where next: where does the BSW go after the election in which it failed to get seats? Can Die Linke sustain this and have success in coming elections in Hamburg among others? How does Die Linke function in opposition to the almost inevitable grand coalition?

Die Linke's success, even without Wagenknecht, is still far from good news in the hopes of a Zeitenwende on foreign policy. Despite this, the party's recovery does have lessons for the left elsewhere, in that a clear and unequivocal position can pay dividends electorally.

BSW's flirtation with AfD voters and openly pro-Russian stances got it above 10% in districts in the former East, but everywhere they did so, the AfD polled incredibly strongly. Further research on agenda setting may have answers for this, as we know this can backfire for mainstream parties.

The failure of the personalist, populist, COVID-sceptic BSW will look familiar to those who've seen the same story in Austria with the Madeline Petrovic List. COVID scepticism had supporters, but how do you maintain those 5 years on from 2020? How do you keep these voters on a wider platform?

As in other countries, the far right with strong gains among the young. The idea that far right support is largely driven by authoritarian older voters against the progressive younger ones is being refuted in every election at the moment.

I will offer more thoughts on the AfD later, but my initial thought is that this is an underperformance for the party relative to polling and internal expectations.

- the exit polls are presenting different outlooks for FDP and BSW, but both are incredibly tight; the eventual outlook may be shaped by this, with the possible coalitions affected heavily by FDP involvement. - Die Linke have done incredibly well, suggesting effective campaigning.

Appearing with Farage too - how interesting that Simion, the supposed arch-patriot and alleged defender of the diaspora, should be happy to pose with someone who has been so instrumental in promoting anti-Romanian views in the UK.

Certainly, there has to be a factor pushing individuals towards these information communities. Vaccine conspiracies or grand narratives are rarely the entry point, and we miss out on this by focusing on the outside influences.

Be it weak institutions, lack of trust in politics, historical memory... There is always an 'in', something that makes people susceptible. Any attempt to combat this without looking at those causes is going to be of limited effectiveness. Just telling people they've been brainwashed doesn't work.
