I, for one, shall be drinking the rosé that has been sat, unfinished in my fridge, since late 2020.

The winners and losers of American atrophy. With universities in crisis, visas restricted and lower salaries across the board, Britain is poorly placed to seize the benefits of Trump's attacks on US academia and science. My newsletter, Lines To Take, out now.

Something small but low-key life-affirming happened to me today. I got caught in a sudden downpour and the paper bag that contained my groceries no longer had the molecular structure of a paper bag.

Been saying this'll be barrier for ages. Glad @jackkessler.bsky.social puts figures on it. Doubtless US academics are no less high-minded and selfless than their counterparts in other countries 😉, but....

On balance, I’d prefer to keep Pax Americana, NIH-funded cancer therapies and mRNA vaccines. But given where we are, the UK really ought to at least try seizing the benefits.

Also, what polling are they using?

This is why when you talk to unhappy US academics, they mention Ireland. Unfortunately Ireland doesn't have many universities and the population is 5 million.

This (h/t @markpackuk.bsky.social) on Tory MPs ignoring @bsky.app is fascinating. X may or may not be evil but it is narrowing. Living in a right-wing echo chamber will only reinforce the party's obsession with Reform, driving it even further towards becoming an ersatz populist radical right party.

It could have happened here. Trump 2.0 shows the damage a Corbyn government would have wrought in Britain. My newsletter, Lines To Take, out now.

This listicle by @theguyliner.bsky.social is generally delightful, but 6, 7 and 11 are literal perfection.

Public satisfaction with the health service has fallen to its lowest level on record. There is reason to think things could get worse. My newsletter, Lines To Take, out now.

Some pessimistic thoughts on @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social and @thekingsfund.bsky.social (excellent!) analysis of public satisfaction with the NHS and social care from the British Social Attitudes survey.

Eye-opening graph with a good article attached.

*Earnest post* If we're looking to provide a bulwark for social norms, feel like a renewed focus on fare dodging is a better use of police time and resources.

In the future, all newsletters will start with a Jeremy Browne chat show anecdote.

Do the Lib Dems really want to replace the Tories? Ed Davey sets his sights on Middle England. My newsletter, Lines To Take, out now.

In which @jackkessler.bsky.social puts two of my favourite things in politics - Jeremy Browne and Parliament's jerk chicken - into one newsletter: www.linestotake.com/p/do-the-lib...
