Edinburgh Council seeks nominations from people who would like to stand as a community councillor. The closing date is 27 February 2025. Informative piece with links from New Town & Broughton CC Chair here: www.broughtonspurtle.org.uk/news/your-co...

Well done to the many residents & volunteers tonight hoping to reinvigorate St Andrew's Church at the foot of Easter Road into a community hub. They're open this weekend with talks about Leith history & the future ♥️

Congrats to the 11 orgs with new #LeithChooses projects starting in Leith/Broughton after the vote; from a mural to intergenerational mental health, to planting trees! Thank you to all orgs & residents for taking part (+ @edinreporter.bsky.social for sharing their stories)!

"Splish splash, I was taking a bath...."🛀 Fabulous photos of a sparrowhawk in Edinburgh's Water of Leith this week. 📷 Pics by George Kelsey 👏 🧵 1/2

After months of talks, today I voted for an Edin Budget that ups school road safety, keeps support teachers & adds £3.6m more for ASN school buildings. All 4 Leith Walk area primaries (Lorne, LW, Abbeyhill & Broughton) are let down by delayed RS projects. www.edinburghlibdems.org/news/article...

Calling Zelensky a “Dictator” must be where the line is drawn. It is my sincere hope that the whole political spectrum in the United Kingdom will speak with one voice in opposition to Trump’s lies.

Join us and Friends of Pilrig Park on Sat 22nd from 10am to 12pm to plant woodland bulbs like native bluebells, snowdrops, winter aconite and wood anemone as part of improvements in Pilrig Park. No experience or equipment necessary.

Friday 14th February 2025. Update. The Council has advised us that the Cemetery will remain closed for "a week or so" while it is made safe. Forestry has been in to identify what needs done.

Tram disruption for 3 days from this Friday - line route will be split in two to allow essential maintenance between Balfour Street, Leith Walk & Shandwick Pl in the West End: edinburghtrams.com/news/changes...

Leith Walk Councillor @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social has been pressing for vital improvements to the state of Leith Walk and Elm Row. www.edinburghlibdems.org/news/article...

Ahead of tomorrow's Edinburgh Council meeting, the Housing Convenor has confirmed an update on the affordable housing, arts studios, path-widening and junction upgrades at Powderhall next to St. Mark's Park.

Disappointing today that Edinburgh Council will still not commit to modest tactile pavement changes down Leith Walk, despite publishing a report stating blind ppl are finding navigation hard. This has been raised as a concern since 2019 & isn't going away! theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2022/12/leit...

Not posted re Leith Walk works for a bit; but I'm hopeful bike stands are to be installed very soon on McDonald Road, Lorne Street, & Smith's Place junctions 🚲 Bigger issues still outstanding incl small slice of my/LD open asks to TransEnv cttee below. Told by CEC that big/final list being compiled

Exactly 1️⃣ week left to vote online in #LeithChooses for new community projects across Leith, Broughton, Newhaven & Hillside in 2025! Very grateful to the @edinreporter.bsky.social for the shift they put in interviewing many of the projects last Saturday.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Though some supermarkets across Edin & Leith were hoping to reopen at 5pm, they may be assessing now so please don't take unnessecery journeys until safe (as tempting as it is after a few hours). Large trees also down at Abbeyhill & Broughton, while #StormEowyn wind HASN'T YET significantly slowed.

🍃 Due to #RedWeatherWarning very high winds, schools, nurseries, bin collections, buses & trains are off tomorrow day (Fri 24th) & NHS prioritising emergencies. 📰 Local updates being posted below. Stay safe dudes - Edinburgh's pointy masonry is no joke. www.edinburgh.gov.uk/severe-weath...

Surface pressure chart for midday tomorrow. Rare red weather warning for Northern Ireland and southern Scotland due to Storm Éowyn. Stay safe out there gang!

Hall set up tonight at Leith Comm Centre at the Kirkgate w/ Cllr Rae, Leith Central, Leith Harbour & Leith Links Community Councils & @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social 1 last push- open tmrrw 12-3pm to learn about & vote/support new community projects at #LeithChooses! Also online Mon leithchooses.net

Anyway, some positivity. Ed Davey gave a good smart speech this morning, and I think his party’s new policy on the EU is good for the pro-European cause more broadly and the Liberal Democrats specifically:

If anyone has memories of Leith St Andrew's at the foot of Easter Road, the (community right-to-buy) Trust want to hear! Sad to see local churches close, but may be a new start- ie nearby Pilrig St Paul's will still collect for the NorthEast Edin Foodbank leithstandrewstrust.org/share-your-stories/

Wahey *direct democracy* klaxon 🗳📣 Next Sat, ppl in Leith, Hillside, Bonnington, Easter Road, Canonmills, Broughton, Newhaven, & NW Abbeyhill can vote for 24 new community projects in-person 12pm-3pm at Leith Community Edu Centre & online via #LeithChooses. Projects now listed on leithchooses.net

The #LeithChooses list is NOW online & from Jan 18th, you'll be able to vote (both online & in-person) for what local project you want to see start! To be eligible to vote, you must either live, work, study or volunteer in Leith, Hillside or Broughton. www.leithchooses.net/gallery/

Edinburgh's Living Streets & residents have consistently called for wider pavements along the project since 2019. While there are lots of examples down Leith Walk, the stretch outside Scotmid at Pilrig can & must be rectified & easiest to justify. Hopeful T&E cttee backs our call tomorrow 👇

I've written to the CEC roadworks team on the unacceptable devs. closure of Anderson Place at Bonnington Road. While I recognise the need for new drainge, closing BOTH pavements (+road) w/o warning signage before people walk or wheel all the way along is not proper.

#SmallBizSatUK y'day & I feel lucky to have such a range of wee enterprises across Leith... many like SilverHub Jewellery on Ferry Road below run social enterprises too. Only a few hours left of 2024's Leith Creative Trail (late, as usual 🙄), but many local indie shops remain open into 2025!

Thanks @shelterscotland.bsky.social for an informative evening learning about Scotland's & Edinburgh's #HousingEmergency, esp. young ppl in temp accommodation. Y'day Edin Council agreed to start publishing figures of young ppl in temp accomm. A very small step to understanding the scandal.

🚌 From tomorrow, the CEC-renewed 13 bus from Lochend to Craigleith (via St Clair Street, Dalmeny Street, Leith Walk, McDonald Road and Broughton Road) will be a blue McGills Bluebird bus, pictured below on Dalmeny Street. Hourly timetable: www.mcgillsscotlandeast.co.uk/services/MESC/13

❄️ A 1.5hrs well spent around Pilrig, but there are serious questions around #Edinburgh's winter pavement strategy given the scenes this morning on main streets, let alone busiest side streets pictured below. Pls note there is a map of grit bins at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/gritting-gri...

Thanks @edinreporter.bsky.social for publishing my letter on the dire situ re Shared Heat Networks around Leith & Broughton, which you can read on page 4 below. Glad to hear Edin MPs pursuing. Pls ensure you're getting welfare you're entitled to if you're struggling to heat your flat or house!

Decent wee day at #SLDConf - esp. talking re-wilding in urban areas w/ the Scotttish Rewilding Alliance, WWF Scotland & the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The push for more street trees down Leith Walk, Easter Road, Bonnington & Broughton continues!

Tomorrow, 17 planters will be removed from #Leith Walk & given to 3 nearby schools. The follows Edinburgh Council’s decision to remove planters after extensive vandalism & explore replacing them with rooted street trees. A small number will be kept along the route & maintained by local businesses.

Thank you Pilrig St Paul’s Church last week for another apt #RemembranceSunday re the consequence of conflict & the importance of rebuilding community.
