Really nice conversation with Jeffrey Church about democracy and social progress on The Political Theory Review podcast. Thanks to Jeffrey for making it happen! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Latest episode of the pod.

Trump wants a less-educated future. Indiana is a cautionary tale of what that looks like. New @haveyouheard.bsky.social starring economist Michael Hicks on what went so wrong for the Hoosier state soundcloud.com/haveyouheard...

Come join us at @umasseduc.bsky.social and become the inaugural Joseph W. and Alma W. Keilty Chair in Education. Area of focus: School-based mental health and wellbeing, with emphasis on historically marginalized populations.

"the...stimulation of...resentment against the perceived elitism of higher education...leaves the masses to the mercy of oligarchs who have aced the populism game. In the inhuman world of ...algorithms trained only to maximise profits for the techno-feudalists, there will be no mercy for humanity"

Congressman Ro Khanna: "What is needed is not the towering courage of a Socrates, nor even of my grandfather, who spent four years in jail as part of Gandhi's movement for Indian independence. What is needed now are the small acts of conscience that together shape the soul of a nation."

@johannneem.bsky.social: "Too many Americans think of freedom as what they can do rather than the security of their ability to do it."

Amazing line from an obit: "Some might have considered him a hoarder, but his friends called him an archivist..."

Pears nicely with the new episode of @haveyouheard.bsky.social

Believe it or not...we're hiring. And it's a pretty incredible position. Come join me at UMass, and serve as the inaugural Keilty Chair in Education.

Threats to democracy are all around us. Meanwhile, public education is facing a range of threats. What better time to start talking about the civic mission of schools? Join us at UMass on April 15. Free and open to all.

Education Department isn't being dismantled, it's being repurposed to destabilize public education so they can privatize much of it. This letter is serving that harm of diversion of public funds to private schools. Other harms of this project think: dysfunction, depletion, & discrimination.

This is really, really good. Thanks to @derekgottlieb.bsky.social for sending it my way. “Thus, what I'm critiquing is strategy divorced from moral foundations, where the means become the end.”

I thought I had coined a new phrase to describe the current tilt of American society: "neo-feudalism." Turns out, no. But the more I read other people's takes, the more I wish I *had* invented the term...because it's so beautifully fitting.

All joking aside... Most whiz-bang school reform is merely an attempt to sidestep the cost of doing it right. We know what it takes to educate young people in a humane and meaningful way.

“Easthampton and Somerville public school districts, as well as the American Federation of Teachers, its Massachusetts affiliate, and other unions, are listed as plaintiffs.” www.bostonglobe.com/2025/03/24/m...

Earlier today, AGs of 20 states + DC filed a lawsuit challenging the firings 2 days ago of Dept of Educ staff. This thread has thoughts/analysis from Kevin Welner. @joshuaweishart.bsky.social @jpygold.bsky.social @derekwblack.bsky.social @drprestongreen.bsky.social @mattpshaw.bsky.social #edsky

In our latest episode, @jackschneider.bsky.social reaches out to voters who cast their ballots for Donald Trump. His ask? Stand up for the public good...even in these times when we are encouraged to believe that no such thing exists. soundcloud.com/haveyouheard...

“This isn’t a call for Republicans to become Democrats. Instead, it’s a call for all of us to break with our parties when our parties break from us.”

If you voted for the sitting president or care about someone who did, I hope you'll listen (and share). I'm not here to chasten or shame. Instead, I hope to convince you that there is still something called "the public good." We all stand to lose if we dismantle public education.

My latest, in @jacobinmag.bsky.social, on why the Trump administration is using the phrase “waste, fraud, abuse” so frequently.

Why does the Trump administration keep making claims about “waste, fraud, and abuse”? Because most Americans wouldn’t support what they’re up to. As it turns out, this has happened before in our history.

Freedom and democracy are, in conditions of rampant inequality, a cruel sham. (Jim March)

Here's a quick Q&A about the Trump administration's executive actions on education, what to expect, and how states should consider responding. statecourtreport.org/our-work/ana...

If you're sitting around hoping for a conversation about how grades distort teaching and learning, we're about to go live on 89.3 FM in Los Angeles. Stream it here: laist.com/shows/airtalk

A radical proposition that was once totally obvious.

These two pieces pair nicely together:

As usual, @jenniferberkshire.bsky.social cuts through the nonsense and explains exactly what’s happening. This time she turns her sights on the dismantling of USDOE.

Donald Trump believes that the Department of Education is "a big con job." But as I argue in @thenation.com, that "con" is what allows tens of millions of kids to live and learn in dignity. And, as it turns out, Americans support it. The trick is getting that message across.

Culture war thrives on abstraction. That's the only way your neighbor can be your enemy. In the latest @haveyouheard.bsky.social, we talk about the importance of getting local. At 30,000 feet it's easy to be an ideologue; on the ground, it's hard not to be a pragmatist.

"Even in the midst of a raging culture war, Americans are still pragmatic people who maintain practical interests in their communities and the institutions that anchor them ... The trick, then, is to sound an alarm now that can be heard across the partisan divide."

My latest in @thenation.com:

If you have extra funds and want to support an org doing essential work to fight the actions against public education and ed research of this administration, @edlawcenter.bsky.social is doing hard, critical work and could use anything you can contribute.

Tell your GOP-voting friends that USDOE does more to fund education in rural communities than they may think. Or at least it used to.

We'll be holding our second annual "Civic Summit" at UMass on April 15. I can't think of a more important topic than preparing the next generation for civic engagement and responsibility. Free and open to all. Registration info below.
