ICYMI: my Balanced Weather post yesterday about potential impacts of NWS reductions in upper air balloon flights balancedweather.substack.com/p/special-ba...

Let’s play a game and see how much input data we can remove from the general circulating models before the weather forecast completely departs from reality. forecast.weather.gov/product.php?...

The Dept of Education’s primary purpose is ensuring that money is distributed equitably. Disbursing functions across other departments recreates conditions that led to formation of DofEd — uncoordinated efforts and inequitable distribution. The attack on DofEd is fundamentally an attack on equity.

If you are visiting the United States, having a negative view of Trump is enough to get you denied entry. If this was coming out of Russia or China, we would deplore such an authoritarian attack on freedom of expression.

Not there yesterday:

This has gone beyond affirmative action and diversity hiring. This is an attempt to erase history and craft an image of the United States that is white and “pure” in the worst sense, out of 1950s television. It will fail because that is not who we are. www.washingtonpost.com/investigatio...

If he can undo the pardons of the Jan 6 committee members, does that mean that a future president can undo the pardons of the Jan 6 perpetrators and throw them back in jail, along with Flynn, Manafort, Stone, etc? He can’t, obviously. This is theatre.

Defund university research? The invention of the cell phone relied on the invention of the transister which relied on solid state physics which relied on quantum mechanics which relied on the mathematics of Hilbert spaces. Where do you go for theoretical physics and pure mathematics?

Trump: ’’Why are we giving money to Harvard when they have a $50 billion endowment?’’ Answer: Because it is in our natural interest to not just teach, but also do research that will not be funded by private industry. 🧵 edition.pagesuite.com/popovers/dyn...

The truth is the greatest threat of all. The South African ambassador was expelled for stating the obvious. BBC:

Columbia School of Journalism knows as much about the first amendment as anyone and would go to the mat to prevent a citizen from being silenced, but they can’t stop a deportation. Columbia issues warning to students after arrest of activist edition.pagesuite.com/popovers/dyn...

If you destroy certain records, there’s no way to tell what happened, what was supposed to happen, or reverse course and start functioning again. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

The Moon and Mars were close last night, viewed from the back yard in Massachusetts. All the science we want can be done without sending humans there, other than studying the effects of those environments on humans. Science is not the reason for humans to go.

Eliminating the National Weather Service entirely would save Americans $4 per person per year. Why cut funding in a place that won’t save a significant amount of money? Could it be ideological? The people there can attest that climate change is real? www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

What do you think happens to the accuracy of GCMs (general circulation models of the atmosphere) used for weather forecasting when you degrade the input data? www.newsweek.com/national-wea...

Nick Schifrin reports on PBS that not all intelligence sharing with Ukraine has been stopped. Sharing of offensive intelligence used for strikes inside Russia has been stopped. Early warning data used for air defense against imminent attacks will not be blocked. /1

This is a fire sale of our property to make private real estate investors rich again, and again. And we might even buy it back later making them yet another profit. apnews.com/article/gsa-... Trump administration releases list of hundreds of federal buildings targeted for potential sale

This is the tariff equivalent of firing the nuclear safety workers. Another oops. www.cnbc.com/2025/03/04/t...

Who humiliated themselves? Host, snarling, raised voice: “You don’t have the cards right now!” Guest, calmly: “I’m not playing cards.” He can’t deal with someone who is not obsequious.

Remember the last time Trump negotiated a peace deal?

I am ashamed of what happened.

“Those who are not immune could be at risk of developing measles between seven and 21 days from exposure, health officials said.” … which means those exposed could be anywhere by the time they know. abc7.com/post/orange-...

Weather apps, weather forecasts on the evening news, weather forecasts issued by private companies like Acuweather, warnings that are issued, all rely on data gathered by NOAA. Models require input temperature, pressure, humidity, etc, from balloons launched every day all over the country and world.

Reminder what tornado death rates looked like before improving forecasting, building codes, education, etc. Research matters. Back to 1875 we go! Figure credit: @hebrooks87.bsky.social

The Dunning-Kruger Effect strikes again. Musk, now Ellison. It turns out that farmers know more about growing food than tech bros. www.wsj.com/tech/larry-e...

If the US takes unilateral military action against Mexican cartels, will the cartels meekly fade away or go to war and fight back violently inside the United States where drones are less likely to strike? Attacking will look great on Fox until US civilians begin dying. thehill.com/policy/inter...
