Great statement to see but I'd have loved to see a better acknowledgement on the importance of community advocacy efforts in achieving their goals. We need a cultural shift & that needs these kinds of intense effort. Which is (partly) why I'm considering creating my own advocacy organisation 😉

Great statement from N8 group. However, to achieve this there needs to be significant community based efforts and some investment in doing this (I'm available 😉). It isn't just about funders or research orgs changing policies, it needs buy in from researchers and the community. #academicsky

I believe that depends if it's European or African? Can we extrapolated from the air speed velocity of an unlaiden swallow? I know some guys.

I'm in Sheffield now. Getting back into climbing after a 2 year break. Mostly in the climbing works but hoping to get out over summer as I miss "real" climbing.

Didn't know you climb! Do you do any indoors stuff too? I'm looking to get out now I'm back near the peaks.

You mean you don't think we should share scientific manuscripts by strapping them to the legs of carrier pigeons? I need to rethink my business plan....

Bonus! Switch away from journals entirely. Post preprints but do not publish in journals, review preprints only and work to change the system. *This is harder than the above steps

4. Advocate to change graduation, hiring and promotion practices where you are and with your funders. Get them to accept preprints (standalone, not requiring that they're reviewed). This is how we get to real, meaningful, change.

3. Educate others about the problems with the current publishing system - @hansonmark.bsky.social paper on this is a fantastic starting point. Listen to him on the podcast discuss this more: open.spotify.com/episode/7vlh...

2. Stop reviewing for journals with high APCs and for-profit publishers. Ideally, review preprints instead by using platforms like @prereview.bsky.social, @reviewcommons.org or @pci-microbiol.bsky.social (or other PCIs)

1. Publish in society journals and with publishers who are value-aligned with science Science (the journal) for example is non-profit but a huge blocker of innovation. Values are just as important as profit status.

I'm chairing a session (Open science and metascience: are we leading by example?) that touches upon this - it was proposed a while back.

How is someone even meant to trust the paper has really been through *any* sort of peer-review? Surely the minimum record should be provision of the review record alongside the paper, even if things are anonymised or redacted as required? 🤔

Definitely agree. But a big part of it is how tied up academics tend to be with their job, it is their identity (it's still mine, though a therapist is helping with that). And I definitely felt when leaving that I was only good for entry level jobs. Although that wasn't where I actually ended up

It is however (apparently) a quick progression back up. So the stress and financial worries are largely temporary.

(Sorry for the very me-focus in this and most coming interactions here. I hate talking about me but I do need a new role. I hope to return to empowering others as soon as possible)

Even if you’re not in the preprint space, these are valuable skills and I would relish a new challenge and opportunity. Hard skills are easy to learn. I want to bring the soft skills that I’ve honed over the past few years.

See the success that I led ASAPbio to in 2024 (this is just a fraction of my work too) asapbio.org/asapbio-comm... asapbio.org/2024-a-highl...

Well you jumped to personal attacks quickly. I won't be engaging further.

Please, read up on science investigating peer review before suggesting this as an answer to anything. It has it's place but this use case is not really it.
